11 Z-Wave Home Automation Co’s at CES 2014 (Part 1)
Check out the first recessed Z-Wave door sensor, the Piper video camera with a home automation hub built in from Black Sumac, the Kwikset Kevo door lock (not Z-Wave) of dubious value, a forthcoming Z-Wave smart bulb and more.
Kwikset will be showing electronic, automated door locks, of course. The newest product is the Kevo, a Bluetooth controllable deadbolt with which you can grant permissions to others to accident. But for over $200, it’s one of the dumbest electronic door locks on the market. It’s not connected to the Internet; it only connects locally when you’re nearby with your Bluetooth 4.0-enabled phone, which many are not. So you cannot, for example, grant access to someone remotely via the Internet. You have to email them an eKey, so they can download the app and unlock the door … assuming they have a Bluetooth 4.0 phone. Worse, you cannot manage permissions for your visitors, like specifying that the house keeper can only use her keys on Wednesday in the month of May. Oh yeah, and eKeys cost $1.99 each. Kwikset has a Bluetooth fob that’s automatically paired with the lock, but there’s no keypad on the lock which, for me, has always been a deal breaker. Then again, I’m probably the only one who jogs without a phone or keys. I’ll stick with my Z-Wave, Internet-connected Kwikset lock with a keypad. Kwikset is licensing technology from Unikey, which had a booth at CES 2013 in Eureka Park for startups but didn’t show up because they were in negotiations withBack to article
