Vivint Solar, an affiliate of rising CE Pro 100 firm Vivint, continues to ramp up its energy offerings around the country by moving into a territory that’s seemingly a no-brainer for the market: California’s Bay Area.

The Golden State has already been a relative gold mine to the solar industry, last year becoming the first in the nation to reach more than 1 gigawatt of customer-generated solar energy, with a record 311 megawatts installed in investor-owned utility territories in 2011, according to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

The CPUC adds that residential solar costs have declined 28 percent since 2007 and that during that span the amount of California Solar Initiative (CSI) projects in middle-income markets (media incomes $50,000 to $100,000) have increased by 445 percent and comprised the biggest bulk of CSI applications in 2011.

Of course, the Bay Area of Northern California, and San Francisco in particular, has always been known as one of the nation’s most progressive and eco-friendly demographic areas. That would certainly make it an attractive expansion market for Vivint Solar, which also offers its systems and services in Massachusetts, New Jersey and, most recently, Hawaii.

“We are pleased to be offering our solar solutions to the eco-conscious residents of the Bay Area,” says Tanguy Serra, president of Vivint Solar. “We have seen tremendous success in the other cities we offer our solar solutions, and plans are already under way to expand into other areas throughout California by the end of the year.”

The CSI Rebate Incentive program has paid out nearly $200 million to owners of residential solar panels from almost 39,000 completed projects as of July 25, according to the PG&E statistics. That consists of 111.9 megawatts installed in residences for Bay Area counties Santa Clara (which leads with 30 megawatts), Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Cruz, San Mateo and San Francisco.

To support its efforts in the region, Vivint Solar opened an office in San Francisco and reportedly plans to hire at least 40 staff members there over the next year and a half, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
