Top 9 Smart Home Devices for Middle-Income Buyers

Parks Associates reveals most appealing smart home devices, including motion sensors, security cameras and panic buttons.

While the high-end of the market is driven by audio, video and control, the middle-income buyer appears to be driven more by security-related devices.

According to data Parks Associates in a survey of broadband households, the most “appealing” smart-home devices to connect are:

1. Smoke/gas/water leak detectors (appealing to about 50 percent)
2. Motion/door/window sensors
3. Appliances
4. Lights
5. Stove/oven
6. Thermostat
7. Panic button
8. Security cameras
9. Door locks (appealing to about 33 percent)

David Weinstein, vice president of residential sales for Lutron Electronics, believes motorized window shades would also make the list but the category suffers from an awareness issue.

During a recent CE Pro webinar he noted, “I think shading would be on this list if people knew they could remotely manage their shades,”

At Napolitano Homes, a top production/semi-custom homebuilder in Virginia Beach, Va., 2014 was a watershed year for adding more technology.

“Up until 2014, we only did structured wiring. This year, all our communities have std. package as part of base package the ability to monitor their thermostat and alarm system with a smartphone.  I think by 2017, most builders in most price ranges are going to get onboard with technology in the home,” says Fred Napoltano II, senior vice president of Napolitano Homes in Virginia Beach, Va., a production and semi-custom homebuilder.
