SwannOne Could be Huge in DIY Home Automation with Pro Security Monitoring
Swann, maker of hugely popular DIY surveillance products, could sell a ton of new SwannOne home automation systems, with professional security monitoring, through existing retail partners.

If you Google “security cameras” or any related term, you’ll find Swann CCTV and video recorder systems everywhere. The products are hugely popular in both DIY and commercial circles, even if the brand isn’t readily recognized.
The product, expected to ship at the end of March, is like many other DIY-type solutions with a few notable features that set it apart.
It starts with a hub that communications via ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth Smart (BLE) and Wi-Fi.
Then Swann offers the usual assortment of peripherals - sensors, cameras, smart plugs, a thermostat—along with a cloud-based service for integration and remote monitoring and control.
While in many regards SwannOne is a me-too product, it does offer some differentiating features.
For example, audio analytics built into new SoundView cameras help the system distinguish between different types of sounds, alerting users to a baby crying or glass breaking, for example.

Another interesting capability is professionally monitored security on a pay-as-you-go basis. Users can set the parameters for alerting the authorities.
The person at the booth told me you can activate the service for a day, or a week, or however long your travels may last. Neither the pricing nor the central monitoring station are known at this time.
Swann wasn’t showing a working system at CES, but the company did showcase the packaging, as well as a retail point-of-sale fixture. I’m a huge fan of the packaging. The iconography is bold, cohesive and sensible. Unlike some home automation products on the market, you can ascertain very quickly what any given product/package does.
Whether or not SwannOne is any good doesn’t really matter. They have the online presence and retail relationships that can make it big.
