Samsung Captures 61% of 3D TV Market

NPD Group reports sell-through data from May 22 to June 18 with Samsung having the bulk of dollar and unit share in the U.S.

According to data from The NPD Group, Samsung Electronics America Inc. has more than a 60 percent market share in sales of 3D TVs in the U.S.

Specifically, for the time period May 22 to June 18, 2011, Samsung has a unit and dollar share of 61 percent in the 3D TV market, which includes both LED and plasma 3D TVs. In addition, according to NPD’s Retail Tracking Service, Samsung has over 50 percent unit and dollar market share for April to May, 2011.

“Clearly consumers are voting with their wallets and choosing the TV that provides a superior 3D experience,” says John Revie, senior vice president of Home Entertainment, Samsung Electronics America, Inc.

Samsung recently lowered the cost of its active shutter glasses to $49.99. The company also has a glasses-free promotion for participating authorized Samsung retailers.
