The new lineup of 4K and 8K TVs will feature Apple AirPlay 2 support, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa voice-assistant capabilities.
February 11, 2019
Samsung has announced its 2019 TV line up, featuring new 4K and 8K QLED models, with the company also updating its The Frame and The Serif TVs. Samsung says its updated lineup features its Quantum Processor to help deliver the company's best viewing experience to date.
For the 2019 lineup, Samsung is adding more ultra-large screen sizes, including an 82-inch option for all 4K QLED TVs due to increased consumer demand.
“Our 2019 QLED line is designed for users who want the best combination of picture quality, smart TV capabilities and design,” says Andrew Sivori, VP, TV product marketing, Samsung Electronics America.
“This year’s lineup represents our largest screen size offering ever. It brings together innovative feature enhancements and exciting content and service partnerships to deliver a truly groundbreaking viewing experience and unprecedented value.”
According to global business information provider IHS Markit, the market for 75-inch or bigger TVs recorded 2.1 million units in 2018 and is expected to grow by 43 percent to 3 million units this year and to 5.8 million units by 2022.
“We have witnessed our customers’ unfaltering confidence and affection towards Samsung QLED TVs within the past year,” says Jongsuk Chu, executive vice president of visual display business at Samsung Electronics.
“This year, our 8K and 4K QLED line-ups are widening the gap in the market for ultra-large TVs. We are proud to deliver our most innovative and immersive lineup to date, and to give users more than they ever thought was possible before.”
New Models, New Sizes
Samsung's QLED lineup will offer 4K models in a range of sizes and spans four series—Q60, Q70, Q80 and Q90—ranging from 43 to 82 inches. The 2019 QLED 8K line is available in five sizes ranging from 65 to 98 inches.
It is also enhancing its design-focused lifestyle TVs, The Frame and The Serif, with QLED picture quality along with new Smart features in a variety of sizes.
The 2019 Q80 and Q90 feature Ultra Viewing Angle technology, which restructures the TV’s panels so the backlight passes through the panel with lights evenly onto the screen. According to Samsung, the TVs are engineered to reduce glare and enhance color to provide a vibrant picture regardless of the viewing position.
In addition, Q70, Q80, and Q90 models offer Direct Full Array technology that uses a panel featuring concentrated zones of LEDs that adjust automatically.
The company's Q900 Series 8K TVs incorporate its proprietary Quantum Processor 8K, which upscales lower resolution content to 8K while also allowing for playback of native 8K content. The processor also optimizes audio and video to the specific content on the screen.
Meanwhile, the QLED 4K models feature Samsung's Quantum Processor 4K, which uses AI upscaling to deliver improved brightness, picture quality, and sound optimized for each scene, according to Samsung.
Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant Compatibility
The company is also now offering iTunes Movies and TV Shows and Apple AirPlay 2 support on its 2019 Smart TV models, with support for 2018 Samsung Smart TVs being made available via a firmware update.
The new Samsung Smart TVs offer even more ways for users to discover and watch content, including a Universal Guide that uses an AI algorithm to leverage a user’s subscription services, favorite content, and TV viewing habits to offer customized entertainment recommendations
In addition, Ambient Mode returns to Samsung’s 2019 QLED 4K and 8K TV models, allowing users to turn a blank screen into a decorative or informational display while the TV is not in active use.
Ambient Mode can provide useful daily information like the time, weather forecast, or that day’s headlines. It can also display artistic content like photos and works of art. New decorative patterns, photos, artwork, and mattes are available this year.
