Plasma Sales Up 14% in Q1 2010

Quixel Research says that plasma sales were strong in the first quarter of 2010, and that sales of LCD TVs slipped slightly due to the economy and post holiday consumer spending.

While dismissed by many as a technology on its last legs, plasma television 2010 first quarter (Q1) sales results once again proved the skeptics wrong, according to Quixel Research.

The research firm’s “Q1 2010 USA Large Area Display Report” indicates that unit sales of plasma TVs grew 14 percent from Q1 2009 to Q1 2010, and this growth amounts to a volume increase greater than the LCD TV 40-inch plus category for the same time period.

“Plasma TV sales are still strong because they provide a great value, and when consumers do a little homework, they understand that plasma TVs offer picture quality that is just as good and sometimes better than LCD TVs,” remarks Tamaryn Pratt, principal Quixel Research. “It also helps that almost all the plasma TVs available today are offered by top-tier brands and for many consumers that seals the deal.”

Quixel Research also says that typical seasonal decline and a recessionary marketplace were the primary contributors to the 32 percent second quarter (Q2) unit shortfall for the Large Area Display category in Q1 2010. The firm also states that from the fourth quarter (Q4) 2009 to Q1 2010, LCD TV sales were down 24 percent; plasma television sales volumes were down 46 percent and micro-display rear projection television sales volumes were down 21 percent.

Revenues for the Large Area Display category were off 32 percent quarter-to-quarter (Q2Q), but had a softer landing year-to-year (Y2Y) with a 13 percent decline from Q1 2009 to Q1 2010.

None of the quarterly sales figures were down, however. Increased sales of 55- and 60-inch models were the fuel for the LCD TV category and overall for the Large Area Display category in Q1 2010. Sales of 55-inch LCD TVs were up close to 600 percent Y2Y and down only 7 percent Q2Q. It’s also noteworthy that 55-inch LED televisions outsold 55-inch cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) models for the first time during the quarter.
