Panasonic’s HD Visual Communications System Goes Beyond Skype
The HD Visual Communications System 1080i telepresence application was demonstrated in style at CEDIA Expo in Atlanta -- and Secaucus, N.J.

This is way more than a mini-cam on Skype! In the booth, Panasonic conducted a live conversation with “Jamie” in Secaucus, N.J. The system consists of a main system unit (the codec), a Panasonic 50-inch Full HD Viera plasma TV, two HD Video Cameras, a 360-degree HD Audio microphone, a VPN Router and an intuitive remote control, along with standard cables. For the demo, Jamie was on a 50-inch plasma.
The Panasonic KX-VC500 HD Visual Communications System allows for full HD images to be displayed on a wide range of monitors, from desktop LCDs to giant flat panels to film screens via projectors. The system also allows for multiple HD cameras, so a second camera can zoom in and share detailed images. Jamie zoomed in on a printed circuit board.
The system employs H.264 video compression technology and requires roughly half the bandwidth of competitive systems, according to the company. But the audio just might have been the most impressive part. Even on the noisy exhibit floor, Jamie could hear me clearly and I could hear her. The system costs $25,000.
