A strong case could be made that no mainstream video manufacturer has embraced Ultra HD with HDR (high dynamic range) more than the Irvine, Calif.-based company Vizio

Announcing its latest product line, the newly introduced P-Series of Ultra HD 4K TVs, the West Coast company is bringing HDR compatibility to price points that are approachable to a greater amount of consumers than ever before.

The TVs also incorporate GoogleCast technologies, and Vizio ships the televisions with its 6-inch 1080p Android Tablet Remote, which comes loaded with its SmartCast control app to control the televisions.

"The Vizio SmartCast app, preinstalled on the P-Series Tablet Remote, finally brings home entertainment into the mobile era with advanced navigation, search and control of content sources," says Matt McRae, chief technology officer, Vizio. "We're excited to debut the P-Series collection, which not only sets a new benchmark with picture quality technologies like high dynamic range and Ultra Color Spectrum, but they are the world's first displays to fully integrate the GoogleCast protocol."

Vizio states the SmartCast app is capable of turning every mobile device screen into a remote control, and it points out that unlike other apps, which require users to open and close apps to access content or specific commands, its SmartCast app allows users to search content by genre across multiple apps all at once.

Vizio adds the app is available to iOS and Android users, and the app eliminates the fear of having to replace lost remotes.

Focusing on the P-Series' inclusion of HDR technologies, Vizio notes the line of products incorporate the same advanced picture quality technologies as its Reference Series products through their use of Dolby Vision.

"We're excited to see Vizio cascade Dolby Vision into their P-Series collection, delivering a premium imaging experience to a broader range of consumers," comments Giles Baker, senior vice president, broadcast business group, Dolby Laboratories. "Viewers are now just a few taps away from the vibrant color and stunning contrast that Dolby Vision brings to Hollywood content."

Further supporting the P-Series' performance capabilities, the company's Ultra Color Spectrum is said to provide a wider color gamut to aid the products' color accuracy. Vizio also points out the TVs include its Full-Array LED Backlighting technologies that includes 128 Active LED Zones the help the TVs to produce deep blacks and more accurate contrast levels.

Pricing for the P-Series:

  • Vizio SmartCast 50-inch P-Series Ultra HD HDR Home Theater Display (P50-C1) is $1,000
  • Vizio SmartCast 55-inch P-Series Ultra HD HDR Home Theater Display (P55-C1) is $1,300
