Movie Servers at ISE 2012: Europeans Unfazed by Kaleidescape Ruling
Kaleidescape shows new Blu-ray carousel; new 3D-capable servers debut from Imerge, VidaBox, Mozaex. DVD CCA lawsuit "didn't really come up," Kaleidescape says.
At Integrated Systems Europe, Kaleidescapewas all prepared to address questions about the recent tentative ruling in its lawsuit with the DVD CCA – a decision against Kaleidescape that came down shortly before the show.
“But it didn’t really come up,” says senior marketing director Tom Barnett during the show. Dealers and distributors interviewed by CE Pro during ISE either didn’t know about the recent ruling or simply didn’t care.
At ISE 2012, the manufacturer of media servers showed a new Blu-ray disc carousel, the DV700 ($5,495), that does not include a built-in disc player. Without the integrated player, says Barnett, the product is “a little less expensive” than the company’s first carousel, the M700 Disc Vault ($6,995).
Barnett says Kaleidescape continues to build its metadata library for Europe, with four people working “day and night” in Sweden, Italy, Switzerland and the U.K. processing data and tagging movie scenes.
Imerge, VidaBox, Mozaex Show 3D Blu-ray Servers
Meanwhile, Imergeseems to have bounced back from its near-dissolution in 2010. Nortek closed the media server business in 2010, but the UK-based pro audio firm Prism Audio picked up the pieces and has continued development on the line.
Imerge MS1-3D movie server
At ISE 2012, Imerge debuted its fourth-generation server that supports 3D. The MS1-3D (press release) enables the archiving and playback of 3d DVD and Blu-ray movies. Perhaps taking a stab at Kaleidescape, Imerge notes that its server does not require a companion disc changer.
Will it pass muster with the DVD CCA, Hollywood and other DRM powers that be? Time (and the courts) will tell.
Also at ISE, VidaBoxlaunched its new vCenter that supports 3D video and 7.1 lossless surround sound (press release). Available with 2TB or 4TB of on-board storage the new server features a built-in optical drive for DVD and Blu-ray playback.
Being cautious with its marketing message, VidaBox notes, “Unencrypted titles can also be archived bit-for-bit.” Nothing explicit about encrypted titles.
A newly updated interface from VidaBox allows users to stream “tons of free, on-demand shows directly from the web.”
Elsewhere at ISE, Mozaexwas showing its own 3D-capable movie servers. The company touted its sub-$2,000 Blu-ray server that is now Control4 certified for easy integration with a home automation system (read Mozaex press release).
Also taunting Kaleidescape and the DVD CCA, Mozaex notes that its server “is unique in that it does not require a disc changer ....”
