Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting: A New Profitable Category

When most integrators think about outdoor installations, they think about audio and video. But long before there were outdoor entertainment areas, there was outdoor lighting, and it was usually the realm of the electrician with line-voltage fixtures. Indeed, low-voltage outdoor lighting was a DIY concern relegated to ill-performing systems that corroded quickly and emitted extremely dim illumination.
One company is trying to change that. Coastal Source, based in the Florida Keys, is a family-owned business that has developed a patented heavy-duty, corrosion-proof low-voltage landscape lighting system for integrators. The diversified company, run by the D’Ascanio family from a 25,000-square-foot showroom, is a complete design/build firm that has been specializing in high-end, complex residential construction, outdoor audio and outdoor lighting since the late 1970s.
After becoming so frustrated with the lack of quality landscape lighting on the market that could withstand the corrosive sea air, Coastal Source developed its own LED-based system using brass fixtures, gold-plated pins and oxygen-free, heavily insulated and jacketed cable that can be daisy chained with no voltage drops.
“Our stuff lasts,” says Franco D’Ascanio simply. The company’s patented Coastal Connector is IP68 rated, meaning it is submersible. There is no termination required in the field, with 2-, 4- and 6-conductor cable in lengths of 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 feet.
Coastal Source began selling its system to landscapers in 2003 and is now targeting the custom electronics industry to become authorized dealers. Integrators must take two full days of hands-on training in the Florida Keys to attain certification for this highly profitable line, which also includes active and passive rock speakers and subwoofers (partnered with JL Audio) and power supplies. Installation is simple, with D’Ascanio estimating that once a dealer has a few jobs under his belt, it can be done in about 15 minutes per fixture.
The products are not cheap, running about $400 per fixture. A typical system installed is about $8,000.
“This is additional revenue,” notes D’Ascanio. “It’s easy and it’s pro table. Some dealers are doing $700,000 in sales with us.”
