The link-U Hybrid SmartCam is a new IP camera from Link Union. Like a lot of other security cameras out there, it offers video monitoring via a smartphone or tablet. However, because it’s a “hybrid,” it can also connect via 3G/4G—and can actually do that automatically in case your web connection gets cut off.
Besides offering two methods of connectivity, the link-U also comes with two sources of power: standard Power over Ethernet and a backup 8-hour battery. There are no routers, firewalls or dynamic IP addresses to deal with. It just offers access to events in real-time or you can opt to record content to an internal SD memory card.
“I’m always traveling for business—so much so that I have more flight hours than some airline pilots. I also have a family, and my travels left me longing for a way to feel closer to my wife, children and elderly mother. I purchased several webcams to connect at home, but router configurations, DDNS problems and invasive firewalls proved to be problematic,” said Andy Benatti, Link Union’s founder.
“link-U was born out of frustration with existing options, with the hybrid nature of link-U solving connectivity issues. It’s also simple to install and configure. Now, I can keep an eye on everyone at home, and my wife feels safer when she is home alone with the kids.”

Link Union is now taking pre-orders for the link-U through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo. The first 100 people to order will score the link-U for $99. There are also plenty of other discounts available well under the product’s $249 MSRP. Once the campaign ends on Nov. 16, 2014, backers can expect the link-U to arrive sometime in February 2015.
