GreenWave Reality Shifts Biz from IoT Devices to Home Automation Services
Now called GreenWave Systems, the company formerly known as GreenWave Reality is done with 6LoWPAN Internet of Things bulbs and switches, focusing instead on software and cloud-based services for IoT deployment.
GreenWave Reality was making some headway with its 6LoWPAN smart light bulbs and gateways, especially in Denmark where it has teamed up with SEAS-NVE, the nation’s largest consumer-owned energy company.
Its products are sold at Home Depot under the TCP brand.
But it seems GreenWave has had enough of the hardware business and is shifting its focus to software and cloud-based services for home automation (HaaS or home automation as a service), including energy management.
The company recently changed its name to GreenWave Systems (much better) and now promotes itself as the provider of “a comprehensive 360° Internet of Things (IoT) software and services platform with reference applications that deliver on the promise of connectivity; simply, affordably and at scale.”
The focus isn’t entirely new for GreenWave, which already has an energy-management trial happening in England. The Thinking Energy trial started in 2011 with energy provider E.ON.
GreenWave also touts partnerships with energy utilities Ausgrid and SP AusNet in Australia, and Dong Energy in Denmark.
GreenWave CMO Nate Williams writes in his blog:
Enabling smart services across all connected devices is a natural promise of IoT, and it’s creating market traction with the connectivity of items such as smart lighting kits, smart meters and smart locks. This means that markets are being reinvented, allowing brands – whether targeting consumers or businesses – to become service providers and enjoy new ways to connect to their customers, drive additional revenue streams and build customer loyalty.
This transformation comes with risks, however, because these new products and services can overwhelm networks and tax enterprise customer service and support teams. That’s why category-leading brands such as DIRECTV, E.ON and TCP rely on Greenwave. We solve the hard problems across design, development, management and data analytics to accelerate the process of profitably deploying managed services. Our business is dedicated to helping our partners deliver access so their customers can engage with - and easily control - any device from anywhere, and on any screen.
Will it fly? GreenWave faces a slew of new competition in the Haas business. Besides the industry-leading Alarm.com and iControl, several newer entrants will appear at the Parks Associates Connections conference next week, May 13-15 in San Francisco. (Look for #CONNUS14)

Most technology products are not that visually appealing. Black boxes and tangled wires do not add to the character of a high-end smart home project. Luckily, our integrator readers have a number of clever solutions so these components don’t have to be visible in your next project.
