The Danish company Dynaudio is celebrating its 40th anniversary by launching its Special Forty loudspeaker, featuring several exclusive design elements to mark its long history of building audio products including an exclusive tweeter, a specially optimized 17cm (6.6 inch) woofer, and first-order crossover network.

Aesthetically, the speaker features a choice of two exclusive high-gloss finishes in the choice of either grey birch or red birch cross-cut sandwich veneers.

Dynaudio says the new woofer and tweeter in the Special Forty were developed with extended frequency ranges to improve the integration between drivers. The technologies incorporated are based on the company's Esotar2 tweeter. The new design allows the tweeter to play down to upper midrange region—approximately 1kHz.

The tweeter employs a precision-coated soft-dome diaphragm, a neodymium magnet, a new magnet system with optimized airflow for proper cooling, a reflection absorbing felt ring, and a ferrofluid-damped aluminum voice coil.

Dynaudio says the woofer handles frequencies up to 4kHz through the implementation of its Magnesium Silicate Polymer (MSP) diaphragm material, and a one-piece, geometrically molded cone design.

Addressing the speaker's crossover network and the integration of the drivers, Dynaudio explains that its engineers purposely developed the drivers to naturally handle frequency overlap.

The Special Forty's phase-aligned, impedance-linearized crossover network is derived from its classic first-order topology. The crossover network features van den Hul wiring and other high-grade components to ensure performance.

Dynaudio says the speaker's AirFlow Basket, which holds the driver motor in place is engineered to minimize the transfer of vibrations to the enclosure, as well as the Special Forty's hybrid magnet system, sit inside the voice coil for increased power and efficiency.

Additional specs:

  • Two-way design, crossed over at 2kHz
  • Bass reflex design with a rear port
  • Frequency response is 41Hz to 23kHz
  • Six-ohm impedance rating
  • Sensitivity rating of 86dB
  • IEC power handling rating of 200 watts
