DSI Expo Focuses on Connected TVs
Distributor's series of educational events focuses on smart TVs from Sony, LG, Mitsubishi, Sharp and Toshiba.
Integrators from across the West Coast recently traveled to the DSI Expo in Costa Mesa, Calif., to get a glimpse at the latest innovations in connected TVs.
“This is the third year we have done the Expo series. It’s important for local integrators who are not part of buying groups to be able to get the education they need,” says Meg Berg of DSI Systems.
The distributor held events in Des Moines, Iowa; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; and Costa Mesa. The Orange County event was the first time DSI had come to that part of the country. There were more than 350 registrants to see about 20 vendors.
One of those attendees was John Quakkelstein of Flying Dutchman in Chino Hills, Calif. He has been focusing on installing smart TVs in hotels and hospitals. “I put smart TVs in common rooms but I am limited in the individual rooms by modulators,” he says. “I build distribution centers with wiring, satellite dishes and amplification. It’s gets complex with a hospital with 300 rooms.
Quakkelstein usually picks up his equipment from the will call desk at DSI. “They have great availability and are pretty well organized. It’s all there,” he adds. Because of its niche, Flying Dutchman focuses on hospital grade equipment, including plenum cable, nurse call stations, splitters (mainly from Vanco) and mounts that must meet the OSHBAD hospital standard for support.
Mike Sanches and Matt Trigg of Merit’s Home Center in Klamath Falls, Ore., were also at the DSI Expo in Costa Mesa. The company, which is part of the SEN buying group, does a lot of DirecTV installations using Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Sharp TVs.
