As many have before, Denon has quietly touted its new Heos wireless multiroom audio system as a Sonos buster … same great features but an open environment for third-party home automation systems.

And now Heos and home-control partners are making strides in integration.

RTI’s new driver is now available, free of charge to dealers, allowing a single smart-home system to manage music from online and local sources, all while controlling lighting and other home-control functions in a single user interface ... and just in time for ISE 2015 next week in Amsterdam.

Heos was introduced last June by Denon Electronics, part of the D+M Group, and it has generated mostly positive buzz from dealers interested in integrating it into their smart home products.

The lineup includes three speakers, an amp and the Helos Link preamp. Most recently Denon announced support for Tidal, the European high-resolution audio streaming service.

But little has been said about drivers for the product until recently, with RTI and Control4 coming to the integration table.

Denon itself is writing the Control4 driver, incorporating SDDP (Simple Device Discovery Protocol) into its products for plug-and-play integration.

Dealers seem to be waiting for a Crestron driver: “Waiting on Crestron driver. Crestron says talk to Denon and Denon says talk to Crestron,” says one dealer posting on the Installers’ Lounge at Remote Central.

“Paul” from D+M posted on RC January 2, 2015, that the third-party control capabilities of Heos “went live just before Christmas (3 weeks later than promised).”

He adds, “The only driver we are developing in house is C4 and we hope to submit it sometime in March. … Crestron and URC should have something we can start QA’ing in the next couple weeks.”

UPDATE: Crestron says its driver will ship in March.

A couple more notables from Paul:

“Just FYI for everyone, HEOS IP control and network hardware is completely different than any other IP/Network product D&M has produced (the board, protocol and software are 100% controlled and developed by D&M).”

“Spotify implementation for HEOS is Spotify Connect, so regardless of driver or control system you would be stuck with the Spotify app. … [But] Rhapsody, Pandora, TuneIn, iHeart, Deezer, USB, and NAS will all work within the control system.”
