Clare Controls Bows Lite Version of Home Automation Hub for Integrators

Clare Controls brings cloud-enabled home automation to broader markets with modular, more affordable Cliq.lite.

Clare Controls hit the home-automation scene in 2011 with a somewhat unusual approach to the channel.

Its cloud-enabled HAaaS (home automation as a service) solution would feature many DIY-friendly configuration tools, but would be sold and installed by professional home systems integrators.

Despite its DIY elements, the system was unabashedly at the high end of the market, integrating with premium subsystems such as Lutron, Crestron, LiteTouch, Vantage and NuVo.

Now Clare is introducing a solution more targeted to the entry level: Cliq.lite.

The new product is based on the company’s Cliq line of modular controllers, anchored by the Cliq.host, the hub of any Clare system.

Selling for about half the price of the original, the .lite version can be fully upgraded to the .host version via a software update and licensing fee.

“If the user ever wants to upgrade the .lite to a .host, he or she would buy an upgrade license and tech support will then flip a switch to make the .lite a fully functioning .host device,” the company says.

The hardware is the same for both units:
6 IR ports
4 general-purpose I/O ports
2 relay ports
2 bi-directional RS-232 ports
2 RJ-45 ports for Gbps LAN
1 Ethernet port for CobraNet
Z-Wave radio and antenna

Thanks to the modular industrial design of Cliq, dealers can expand I/Os by stacking (clicking) additional modules onto the hub. All layers in the Cliq stack communicate seamlessly over the ClareBus to the host controller.

The full-fledged .host controller offers unlimited control of these subsystems, while the .lite version imposes these software-based restrictions:

Audio – 4 zones
Lighting – 10 loads
Security – 1 partition/8 zones
Thermostats – 2 (via Z-Wave)
Cameras – 2
Pool/spa – 0
Entertainment – 2 devices
