Finally someone has invented a more elegant solution for pulling HDMI cables through a wall without damaging the HDMI cable or connector or compromising the integrity of the signal using BALUNs.

The solution comes from Celerity Technologies (which for some reason I have difficulty pronouncing), exhibiting this week at CEDIA Expo 2012. Celerity claims to have invented the first fiber optic cable solution with detachable HDMI connectors that supports an audio return channel.

“Copper cables and BALUN solutions limit the distance and picture quality and also require external power supplies and additional cables,” says Buzz Delano, director of business development for Celerity. “That’s way too much complexity. We’ve solved those issues once and for all.”

Celerity’s Fiber Optic Cable features proprietary technology to convert HDMI signals into light signals with support for up to 1080p 3D and 4K resolutions.

The cable is plenum-rated and comes pre-terminated with what appears to be USB micro connector jacks at each end and detachable HDMI connectors. Different lengths of cable are available from 40 feet to 1,000 feet. Just to get a gauge, the MSRP for a 100-foot run is $500; MSRP for a 1,000-foot run is $1,800.

Custom lengths starting from 250 feet can be ordered in 50-foot increments by an authorized Celerity Technologies dealer with a three-week lead time. Product will be shipping at the end of the month.
