10 Awesome Resources & Tools for Touchscreen Design
GUI developer Aaron Craig of NTDesigns shares great online tools, tutorials, and tips for beginner and expert interface designers
Most modern touchscreen devices now support .png graphics—semi-transparent buttons and elements that allow the background to show through. This brings the background image to the forefront so to speak and in many cases, it’s the most notable feature of the interface design. This tutorial shows how to create a very stylish and professional-looking background image rather easily using Photoshop. This one tut could be used to create dozens of fantastic backgrounds.
7. Cognitive Distortion Image Bank
An enormous library of high-quality images that make fantastic touchscreen backgrounds. The subject matter ranges from exotic cars and beautiful nature scenery to professional, 3D digital artwork. Images are free for personal use up to a certain size and for a small, monthly fee you can ditch all advertisements and gain access to much higher resolution files.
8. SpoonGraphics Blog
Chris Spooner heads up this terrific blog that regularly features tutorials that can apply to touchscreen design. This post is a great roundup of icon creation tutorials.
9. Smashing Magazine Graphics & Inspiration
If I was stranded on a desert island and I had to pick one RSS feed to subscribe to, it would be Smashing Magazine. Some of the best bloggers in the world of graphic design contribute to this site. I stop here daily to check out the ‘Graphics’, ‘Inspiration’ and ‘Design’ sections.
10. Remote Central GUI Forum
RemoteCentral.com is a household name in the CE world, but one of the site’s most valuable resources, its forums, is frequently overlooked. The forums are a great place to find answers to your most specific and detailed questions. There is also a new forum dedicated entirely to graphical user interface design!
