In our story about the new Walmart installation program through NEW, one dealer commented that the program was a complete ripoff of Zip Express Installation. "If I was Zip, I would sue the you know what out of these copy cats," wrote James Carlson. That's not gonna happen. "At first I was deeply concerned about how similar their program was to our Zip Express Installations program," Zip founder and president Chris Mauzy tells CE Pro. Zip Express Installation has scored another win for its home entertainment and networking installation business. The company has partnered with Shopko, a $2 billion regional retailer of everything from pharmaceuticals to optical services to home entertainment gear. Shopko, headquartered in Green Bay, Wis., has 136 stores in 13 states throughout the Midwest, Mountain and Pacific Northwest regions. With the deal, Zip strengthens its furniture assembly and regular old "white glove" delivery offerings in its roster of services. Furniture assembly starts at $130. The CE industry has not been immune to the recession, incurring thousands of layoffs and job eliminations over the past two years. A relatively new company called Zip Express Installation hopes to help custom installation companies fill their technicians' down time with small jobs, like hanging a flat-panel TV. The jobs are contracted either directly with a consumer or on behalf of a retailer or e-tailer. The Minneapolis-based company is the brainchild of CEO Chris Mauzy and was borne from his experience helping Best Buy set up an installation service with Geek Squad.
