Walmart, Vudu Ripping DVDs to the Cloud
Grant Clauser | 03/14 07:10 AM,

Walmart wants to be your movie server in the cloud, the digital bin where users store all DVDs for access on all Internet-connected devices. Walmart, in conjunction with Vudu, has launched an in-store program that turns DVDs into digital cloud-stored copies which, presumably, would be accessible over tablets, smartphones, smart TVs and more. Walmart acquired Vudu in Feb. 2010. Walmart, which has support from major movie studios such as Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros., the service will launch on April 16, 2012 in 3,500 stores. The back catalogs…

Which streaming video service offers the best quality audio? Which has the most movies with subtitles? Which has the richest parental controls? Our friend (and neighbor) Gabe Gagliano at Tech of the Hub created an incredible chart comparing these and other features of the major premium video services: Amazon Instant and Prime, Hulu Plus, iTunes, Netflix and Vudu. [continues] Click for the full chart He offers some excellent analysis to go with the chart, including these notable updates since the last update in Q3: Other notable changes since the August-September…

iTunes, Vudu Gain Market Share at Expense of Zune, Sony
Julie Jacobson | 08/29 07:04 AM,

Apple iTunes stemmed its decline in market share for Internet video on demand (iVOD) in the first half of 2011. Its share was up slightly from the same period in 2010 -- from 64.9% to 65.8%. The service still swallows its competitors, but Walmart's Vudu -- now the No. 3 iVOD service -- is coming on strong. In the first half of 2011, the high-def streaming service commanded only 1% of the market for Internet video. This year, Vudu now has 5.3%, besting both the Sony PlayStation Store and Amazon.…

Woot! Shows Vudu is Service Non Grata
Julie Jacobson | 07/16 10:53 AM,

When Woot! put a refurbished Magnavox Blu-ray player for sale recently ($49.99), one user posted, "Doesn't do Netflix, only Vudu, so its very basic." There was a time when Vudu enjoyed the reputation as a high-end video streaming service, delivering ultra high-def content for a few dollars per title. But few folks beyond the rare videophile have ever heard of it, despite efforts by newish owner Walmart to take the service to the masses. The Woot! sale on Thursday demonstrates the public's general ignorance of Vudu, even though most of…

Vudu & Walmart Movie Cards are ‘Stupid, Overpriced’
Julie Jacobson | 06/17 08:46 AM,

Image: Engadget Did you hear the one about driving to Walmart to buy a "movie card" that you take home and then enter a code into the computer so you can stream a movie? It's true! Walmart is selling the $14.96 digital movie cards for Sony's Battle: Los Angeles for enjoyment through the Vudu streaming movie service, acquired by Walmart last year. It all makes perfectly good sense in the press release, right? “Digital movie cards are a great way for Walmart’s millions of movie customers to own and watch…

Vudu Adds More TV Shows, Not All HD
Rachel Cericola | 05/04 11:17 AM,

Wal-Mart didn’t buy Vudu for nothing. The retailer seems ready to compete with Netflix and other streaming services, announcing that Vudu is adding more TV shows in its lineup. Starting today, you can watch shows such as "Glee," "Modern Family" and "Nurse Jackie." You can also catch up on "Weeds," "Bones" and "Gossip Girl." If the lineup seems sort of random, well, it is. But you have to start somewhere, right? We’re just sad it's not starting completely in HD. After peeking through the lineup, we see that not every…

LG PX950 plasma televisions
Robert Archer | 12/06 06:51 AM,
Over the past several years experts such as Joe Kane, Joel Silver and THX have taught dealers, installers and consumers the benefits of having and installing a properly calibrated video display. Disney's recent introduction of its Worlds of Wonder calibration disc reinforces Kane, Silver and THX's position that a properly calibrated video system is a major component of a quality home theater and LG's new PX950 series of plasma television helps to fulfill this need. The introduction of the THX certified LG PX950 plasma television takes calibration to the masses…

What CE Pros Are Saying About Streaming Content
Julie Jacobson | 11/22 08:41 AM,
5 Comments
Following a presentation on "Streaming Media" earlier this month during CE Pro Live, integrators gathered in a virtual chat room to discuss the topic. One overriding theme emerged: Streaming content is confusing and integrators aren't quite sure how to present it to their clients and how to profit from it. Talk turned to Hulu, Google TV, Apple TV, Vudu, Roku, Boxee, digital rights management and the problems of bandwidth limitation. In other chats during CE Pro Live, integrators expressed frustration about Internet providers throttling bandwidth, charging more for usage and…

Netflix HD Streaming Finally Comes to PCs, Macs
Julie Jacobson | 05/18 04:41 AM,

There were rumors this week and last about HD Netflix streaming coming to PCs and Macs, but no one could find the content and Netflix wasn’t talking. Today, however, it is here. Netflix must be testing its servers because there still is no official announcement about the new capabilities. Viewers have reported watching a title in HD, only to have the movie disappear from the HD roster thereafter. Joelkirzner has the most recent post on the Microsoft-owned Media Center forum, thegreenbutton.com: HD CONFIRMED... FINALLY! I just logged into my account…

Vudu/Walmart Gets Streaming HD Exclusive on Avatar
Julie Jacobson | 04/21 09:24 PM,

Evidently, it pays to have the highest-definition instant-streaming video capabilities (1080p/24) on the planet. Vudu – which does – has the exclusive on Avatar in live HD streaming. (Perhaps Walmart's bet paid off.) It’s available now. Vudu began streaming the movie – not in 3D of course – to Vudu-enabled TVs and settop boxes at midnight. “Most other services will have Avatar in SD but not in HD,” the company says. Playstation will have it in HD, but you can’t watch it instantly. You have to download it. Other than…
