Ultimate Electronics Brand Name Up for Auction

The intellectual property of Ultimate Electronics, which declared bankruptcy in January and began liquidating its assets in February 2011, will be sold at auction on May 25, 2011 in New York. Those assets include trademarks, domains and related intellectual property. The auction is being done by Streambank LLC, a company that specializes in "intangible asset disposition." Ultimate has filed a motion in Delaware Bankruptcy Court seeking approval of the sale of its intellectual property. Ultimate Electronics’ Liquidation Offers 30% Discounts at All 46 Stores

Forty-year-old Ultimate Electronics started its liquidation on February 12, 2011 and will continue until all merchandise has been sold, with some merchandise up to 30 percent off their original prices. Merchandise including high definition televisions, computers, home theater and audio systems, video equipment, digital cameras and GPS devices from brands such as Bose, Sony, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Canon and Nikon are being liquidated. 18 CE Companies Hurt Most by Ultimate Electronics’ Liquidation

Ultimate Electronics Chapter 11 bankruptcy and subsequent liquidation has a ripple effect throughout the industry. Many consumer electronics vendors were hit badly with huge sums of money owed to them as the company prepares to close 46 stores. The bankruptcy documents (.pdf) detail how much money some of the top suppliers in the CE space stand to lose because of the liquidation. For example, Sony stands to lose $4.7 million and Monster $2.37 million, according to the bankruptcy documents. Ultimate Electronics' total debt is listed in the $100 million-$500-million range.…

Ultimate Electronics Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Ultimate Acquisition Partners, parent company of Ultimate Electronics, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., citing decreased sales at certain locations and refusal of some suppliers to ship goods on credit. According to the bankruptcy filings, Ultimate Electronics owes $64.8 million to General Electric Capital Corp. Its largest unsecured creditor is Video Products Distributors Inc., a distributor of DVDs, which is owed $6.1 million. Who’s the Next Tweeter?

Being the next Tweeter is both good and bad. The good part is that, for a time, the company enjoyed meteoric success expanding through acquisition beyond its New England roots to become a coast-to-coast specialty electronics retailer. The bad part is obvious: It apparently grew too fast and lost focus of the brand that made it successful before crashing and burning. As electronics retailers expand - most notably Indianapolis, Ind.-based hhgregg and Thornton, Colo.-based Ultimate Electronics - one can't help but compare and contrast them with Tweeter.
