The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced its 2011 class of inductees into the Consumer Electronics (CE) Hall of Fame, and custom electronics is well represented. Among the 11 inductees are two prominent pioneers in the custom market: Sam Runco and Sandy Bloomberg. Runco is founder of Runco International, the first company to introduce a line doubler with a multi-frequency projector in 1990 as well as the first multiple-aspect-ratio controller, the ARC-IV, to the high-end home theater market. Bloomberg is the founder of Tweeter, the specialty consumer electronics retail chain that…

Who’s the Next Tweeter?
Tom LeBlanc | 09/07 09:16 AM,

Being the next Tweeter is both good and bad. The good part is that, for a time, the company enjoyed meteoric success expanding through acquisition beyond its New England roots to become a coast-to-coast specialty electronics retailer. The bad part is obvious: It apparently grew too fast and lost focus of the brand that made it successful before crashing and burning. As electronics retailers expand - most notably Indianapolis, Ind.-based hhgregg and Thornton, Colo.-based Ultimate Electronics - one can't help but compare and contrast them with Tweeter. The Tweeter story…

Can hhgregg Replace Tweeter?
Tom LeBlanc | 02/04 10:51 AM,

Much has been made about hhgregg’s ambition to win over Circuit City’s former customers by opening stores in the defunct retailer’s most lucrative markets. But it also seems to be filling gaps that have been left since Tweeter went out of business. “When a window opens, we take advantage," CEO Dennis May said recently. “Circuit City’s demise no doubt is a big part of that opportunity.” After announcing a net sales increase of 20.3 percent for Q3 ended Dec. 31, 2009 — a quarter in which it opened 10 stores…

It's easy to associate Sandy Bloomberg with Tweeter. But now, two years after he sold Tweeter to Schultze Asset Management and one year after it shut its doors and is brand is being auctioned off, Bloomberg wants to be associated with his current venture: ZVOX Audio. Bloomberg says he’s about to become a third partner in ZVOX, teaming up with president and product developer Tom Hannaher, formerly of Cambridge SoundWorks, and speaker designer Winslow Burhoe, formerly of Boston Acoustics. ZVOX makes simple audio solutions, accessories, cables and connectors. ZVOX's audio…

Tweeter Brand Up for Sale
Tom LeBlanc | 11/16 02:50 PM,

The Tweeter brand is up for grabs. The Canton, Mass.-based specialty electronics retailer that once had nearly 200 locations across the U.S. shut its doors in Dec. 2008. However, it's possible that its brand soon will be back from the dead. Atlanta-based liquidator Apto Solutions is accepting bids for Tweeter's intellectual property, including its name and URLs, according to Christopher Re, VP of business development for Apto. All bids are due by Nov. 30, 2009, says Re, who is handling the bidding process. "Then a deposit is due Dec. 7…
