Elan Home Systems has always been a company that's been able to balance competitive price points, modern technologies and pleasing industrial designs. The latest example of how the company balances these three key items on a consistent basis can be found in its new TS10 touchscreen. The TS10 is the latest user interface from the company and it is engineered to provide homeowners with a versatile, easy-to-use control device that facilitates their use of their home electronics. Elan says the new touchscreen incorporates the company's "touch-and-swipe" user technologies with an… View this story

Just when you thought the dedicated touchscreen was dead, URC is coming out with a new one that looks a lot like an iPad but acts more like a whole-house controller. The manufacturer of home automation and remote control systems had a prototype panel, the TKP-7000, at CEDIA Expo 2011 but wasn’t saying much about it. No ship date, no pricing. But CE Pro did get a look at the beauty and managed to snap some video footage (below). The 7-inch capacitive-touch panel is part of URC’s new Total Control… View this story

When we first wrote about the new $999 portable touchscreen from Control4, CE Pros and consumers alike greeted the announcement with mixed reviews: Confirmation that Control4 is losing touch with what *consumers* actually want in favor of what *dealers* want. ----------------- Lets see, compare $1,000 MSRP to $700 that the customer bought at the Apple Store, you made $0 on and you still have to buy the App! I’m confused as to what is wrong with this picture, hmmm! ----------------- My Ipad is never where it is supposed to be… View this story

Control4 is launching a new 7-inch portable touchscreen for its home automation systems during CEDIA Expo 2011. At about $1,000 retail, the unit costs roughly twice as much as an iPad. Who builds dedicated touchscreens anymore? Savant dropped theirs awhile ago to focus on Apple iOS devices. Crestron no longer cranks near as many touchscreens as they used to. And AMX has pared down their touchscreen development, except for the innovative new Modero X ultra-widescreen panel. So what is Control4, the value-priced home automation brand, thinking? “While we support and… View this story

At Infocomm 2011, AMX revealed one of the first interesting touchscreens to hit the market in many years – the ultra-widescreen Modero X. Now CE Pro gets an exclusive look at the companion Bluetooth handset that brings even more sleek to the multitasking machine. At AMX headquarters in Dallas, Joe Andrulis, VP global marketing, provided one of the most extensive Modero X demos ever captured on video (below). The unit is not yet ready to demonstrate in live mode, but the simulations are something to behold. Sure, the thing is… View this story

We rarely report about new touchscreens for home control these days. Ever since the iPad came out, it’s hard to find anything particularly interesting about dedicated touchscreens for the residential and commercial markets. We're big fans; it’s just hard to make them sound exciting. But AMX is introducing a real looker at Infocomm 2011: the Modero X Series. These ultra-widescreen touchpanels give us something to talk about. Like, they’re really wide. It may not be rocket science, but you can see how these beauties would be fun in the home,… View this story

Crestron's new TPMC V-Panels, now shipping, combine the touch screen with a powerful digital graphics engine in what Crestron claims is the thinnest (2 inches), fully-integrated touchpanel available. Aided by rich color graphics, 3D GUI animations and gestures navigation in either 12-inch or 15-inch widescreen displays, the TPMC panels provide an entirely new canvas for intuitive control of home theaters, lighting, thermostats, AV networks, security cameras, pool/spa, energy monitoring, gate access and any other connected automation system. The new models feature a slew of built-in apps for enjoying music and… View this story

[UPDATE 9/15: New images at right, overlay screen below, and page 2] Add Philips to the growing list of remote-control manufacturers that wants to be known as a home automation company. At CEDIA Expo 2010, the company will demonstrate its new TSW9500 in-wall touchscreen, ProntoTunes iTunes controller, the next version of Pronto Edit Professional (PEP3), and a Crestron emulator that shows how a Pronto remote can be used instead of a pricier Crestron touchscreen. Pronto In-Wall Touchscreen with Soft Buttons The touchscreen was first demonstrated at Infocomm in June, but… View this story

It's official, according to AppleInsider: iPhone's new 4.0 software update will support multitasking. So, presumably, will the iPad. According to the article: Today's iPhone 3.x software is a fully preemptive multitasking operating system, but it artificially restricts apps (other than specific ones bundled with the system by Apple) from running in the background. Controversy over "multitasking" within the iPhone OS has been brewing ever since Apple launched iPhone 2.0 with the ability to run third party software titles. While often reported as begin a technical flaw, the iPhone OS really… View this story

Fresh after its acquisition by Russound, Colorado vNet is making its first appearance at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE), which begins tomorrow in Amsterdam. Previously, vNet did not have the proper certifications to offers its multiroom A/V and automation systems in Europe. Now it does. At ISE, the company is adding a few goodies to its touchscreen line. Most importantly, there is now a 4.7-inch touchscreen, in addition to the 7-inch model that vNet has had all along. “This fills a big hole for us,” says Russound’s Petro Shimonishi, who has… View this story
