Somfy Brings Window-Covering Pros into CE Channel

Somfy, a world leader in motorization for window coverings and screens, has recruited and trained the first 60 dealers for its new Tahoma home automation and energy management system, said business development manager Steve Iommi during the Electronic House Expo last week. Introduced last year as a means for selling more motorized shades, Tahoma is a fairly simple system for controlling the company’s own motorized shades, as well as smart thermostats, lights and other Z-Wave-enabled devices. Programming Tahoma is a breeze, which probably explains why the large majority of new…

JJ’s Takeaways from CEDIA 2011

CEDIA Expo 2011 was two months ago, but the innovations from the event are still fresh. While there were some mind-blowing products like Sony's affordable 4K projector, there were also some more modest developments that signify industry trends: Return of the touchscreens iPad and Android tablets were all over the show floor, as usual, but that doesn’t signify the end of the dedicated touchscreen. Seems they’re actually enjoying a comeback, even in the middle market. Both Control4 and URC introduced new 7-inch touchpanels that look like sleek tablets but act…

Behind Somfy’s Tahoma System: A Sleeper Home Automation Engine

We were impressed with the home automation engine driving the new Somfy Tahoma – a simple yet elegant system for integrating and controlling lights, thermostats and Somfy’s own motorized window treatments. Somfy didn’t create the system itself. The company makes motors and controls for window treatments, lifts and other motorized devices – not software. So when it came to creating a whole-house control system focused on energy management, Somfy turned to a sleeper of a developer called Bulogics. Bulogics has been around for more than five years, apparently finding its…

Could Motorized Shades Drive Home Automation?

Quick, which home technology gets you in the door with clients? Multiroom audio? Energy management? Universal remotes? Lighting control? How about motorized shades? Window coverings that rise and drop at the press of a button, and respond automatically to light and temperature sensors, will be the killer app for home control if Somfy has anything to do with it. A world leader in motorization for window coverings (and projection screens and lifts and more), Somfy has developed a whole-house control system that makes motorized shades a “core part, not an…

Somfy’s Slick New Tahoma Automates Lights, Thermostats, Shades
Julie Jacobson | 12/15 09:48 AM,

Somfy, a leader in motorized window shades, is launching a complete home automation system for controlling shades, lighting, thermostats and more. When Lutron came out with a similar solution last year, the RadioRa 2, we called it a trifecta for energy management. Somfy calls it a home “energy triangle.” Targeted to the mass market, Somfy’s TaHomA (loosely translated: “Total Home Automation”) system allows users to remotely control their home technology, notably the three systems that can most contribute to energy savings: lights, thermostats and motorized shades. Window coverings are an…
