When Roaming Around Is A Good Thing
Advertorial | 02/10 09:00 AM,
It’s no revelation to say that residential wireless networks are taking off in popularity, and that larger-scale networks are being installed in a growing number of homes. These days, smart homes can mean opportunity for smart dealers. A fundamental consideration for installers to be aware of is that wireless LAN (local area networks) that cover a large area, such as those in larger homes or businesses, require multiple wireless access points to achieve adequate coverage. (A single wireless access point, or WAP, has limited range.) However, with most wireless installations,…

Hercules May Be Best Kept Secret in Serial Communications
Julie Jacobson | 10/18 07:23 AM,
4 Comments
If serial communications make you crazy, here’s a tip: Download the free Hercules utility from HW Group. The recommendation comes from Bill Paul, owner of NeoPro, which makes integration-friendly A/V switchers. Paul makes the suggestion during a short, extremely informative video presentation on the new communications features of NeoPro’s analog matrix switchers. In introducing the refreshed matrix line, Paul says, “It’s a lot easier to test out new serial commands if you have a better terminal program than Windows HyperTerminal,” a popular utility employed by many home systems integrators. Paul…

Are 4 Sources Enough?
Jessica Camerato | 05/05 06:38 AM,
2 Comments
Long gone are the days when audio/video sources were limited to three or four options. Today, there is a laundry list of possibilities: gaming systems, DVD players, DVRs, Blu-ray players, music servers, iPods, Apple TVs, stereo systems, AM/FM radios, projectors, TVs, equipment racks. The list goes on. But that doesn't mean the number of technologies used in a home has to be dictated by size of the space. In the past, the mindset was to have more zones than sources to address the needs in each room. But products on…

Review: ZvBox 150 QAM Modulator
Fred Harding | 02/25 07:38 AM,
6 Comments
Years ago, custom installers worked with modulators to convert base band video signals to NTSC television channels. Manufacturers like Channel Plus, Pico Macom, Channel Vision, Blonder Tongue and others made a variety of options in this category. Installers would use these devices to make security cameras, VCRs, satellite boxes and other sources available to any television on an unused channel. With the advent of the ATSC changeover, NTSC modulators have lost some of their luster. The picture quality difference between a modulated NTSC channel and an ATSC channel is fairly…

Will A/V Receivers Need to Be 3D Compatible?
Grant Clauser | 01/08 10:05 AM,
26 Comments
A source from the Blu-ray Disc Association told CE Pro at CES 2010 that a possible speed bump in the road to greater adoption of 3D Blu-ray may not come from the TVs, players or content providers; it may come from A/V receivers and HDMI switching devices. While HDMI 1.4 is in the specification for 3D Blu-ray, it’s not a requirement for sending a 3D Blu-ray signal from a player to a television. That’s why Sony’s Playstation 3 can be firmware upgraded to be 3D Blu-ray compatible while only having…
