After his seven-store Washington, D.C. chain closed in early 2010, former MyerEmco CEO Jon Myer said “the future of every multi-store specialty retailer is extremely lean”. Myer added that “it’s not coming back.” But he is coming back. For “a tidy sum,” Myer bought MyerEmco’s brand, customer list and intellectual property. When MyerEmco announced it is shutting down it got people thinking about the future of the specialty electronics retail — a market in which regional retailers are struggling, downsizing and dropping like flies. It seems like every time an electronics retailer shutters, hhgregg opens a new slew of stores. Indianapolis-based hhgregg, which currently has 127 stores, says it will open five more and hire 240 positions while expanding into the Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania markets.
