Sonos SUB
Grant Clauser | 05/22 10:21 AM, 2 Comments
Sonos, arguably the world’s favorite wireless music distribution company, has added to its family of wireless speakers with the new Sonos SUB. The subwoofer works with the Sonos Wi-fi based network system to allow easy multiroom audio without pulling wires or drilling holes. I bullied my way into a private demo in New York to find out what it was all about. I’m glad I did, because while it’s not a paradigm-shifting product, it’s still pretty cool. The Sonos SUB is a little unconventional-looking. It’s shaped like a big “O”… View this story

Sonos has been teasing dealers under NDA about a new product to be introduced soon. And the Sonos forums are buzzing about the next big thing from the beloved provider of wireless audio. What can it be? Two years ago, we found a Sonos job posting for a senior product manager, home theater sound, and speculated the company would release a wireless surround sound system. The current job board doesn’t provide much of a clue, except for a posting for an engineering project manager, smart speaker products. This Engineering Project… View this story

Sonos CR200 Wireless Controller
Rachel Cericola | 04/09 08:04 AM, 5 Comments
If you or your clients are fans of the Sonos CR200 Wireless Controller, you’d better stock up. Sonos plans to discontinue the controller starting June 1, 2012. According to The Verge, Sonos is dumping the hardware for its multiroom audio system, in favor of software-based control methods. This includes the free iOS and Android apps, as well as software for the PC and Mac. “We knew from the early days of the iPhone explosion that controlling our system from the device that people were carrying around in their pockets is… View this story

The European home automation standard KNX continues to gain steam, as we are finding at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) in Amsterdam. One of the most useful demonstrations comes from iKNiX (formerly Empure), showing a compact system integrating lights, thermostats, Sonos multiroom audio, and other home automation and A/V gear … all via the low-rate KNX protocol. The products are connected via a series of off-the-shelf KNX adapters that translate the protocol to and from IP, IR, RF, and relay. “If there’s not already a [KNX] gateway out there, someone is… View this story

Since we just created CE Pro’s Person of the Year in 2011, we missed a few influential characters that have substantially impacted the custom electronics industry in the past couple of years. Had we launched this program two or three years ago, these individuals likely would have topped the list for shaking up the industry. Will West, Eric Smith: Co-founders, Control4 Before Control4 emerged as a force in the industry a few years ago, no other company had seriously challenged the established home automation pack for 20 years. Control4 broke… View this story

Sonos recently released the Sonos System Software 3.6, an update that adds more control and more music to the Sonos wireless user experience. Sonos says the free software is available to all Sonos customers with a one-button update to their system, and the new update adds to a homeowner's ability to easily access and control their music. The software update is available now for iOS devices and is new to Android tablets and smartphones, allowing users to control their Sonos system from any Android device, including the Kindle Fire, HTC… View this story

It was a rare thing to walk into a manufacturer’s booth at CEDIA Expo 2011 and not be confronted by an app for this or that. This industry has apps to turn up the music, lower the shades, manage the home theater, spy on the neighbor, flush the toilet and turn off grandma’s pacemaker. And I like that, a lot. The rise in Appism means I have several tap-friendly things in my house that can work with nearly any device. That also means half of that stuff lacks any dedicated… View this story

Professional Audio Associates (PAA) really knows how to throw a party. The New England distributor hosted its fourth annual open house on June 22 to the delight of hundreds of local integrators who stopped by throughout the day for show specials from over 30 vendors. The event, hosted by Lew Freedman, gives the distributor a chance to showcase new product for its dealer base. The day was rainy, which meant people were elbow to elbow inside the Woburn, Mass. facility. PAA catered the event with an outdoor barbeque under tents.… View this story

The iPhone may be the darling of the smart phone industry, but that doesn't mean it owns the market. The Android platform has quickly caught up to Apple's iconic product and it now as an OS outsells Apple. Making sure it provides Android owners the same control flexibility as Apple owners, the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based audio company Sonos is now offering Android-based smart phone owners a Sonos control app that's a free download. Sonos says the app works with any Android phone that runs the 2.1 operating system and with… View this story

Sonos Controller for Android
Rachel Cericola | 02/10 12:21 PM, 2 Comments
There are a lot of ways to control the Sonos Multi-Room Music System. Soon, you can add Android smartphones to that list. Sonos just announced the Sonos Controller for Android, a free app that adds Sonos control to almost any Android smartphone. That means you can go anywhere in the house and tap into music from a digital collection, as well as more than 100,000 web radio stations, shows and podcasts, right from an Android phone. That music can then be played anywhere the Sonos system is set up. Of… View this story
