Whether it's at the theater, in the home or even at school, it seems that interest in 3D video has no boundaries. Portland, Ore.-based InFocus is helping to bring 3D into the classroom through the release of its new IN100 series of products. The company's latest line of projectors includes five models: the IN112, the IN114, the IN116, the IN124 and the IN126, and according to InFocus, the projectors are lightweight and small enough to move in the event multiple classrooms need to share a projector. InFocus adds the line… View this story

Mainstream video projectors were up 3% in Q1 this year compared to the same period last year. But the somewhat modest growth belies some dramatic changes in the product makeup of the Mainstream category, which Pacific Media Associates defines as projectors with 500 to 4,999 lumens. According to a recent report by PMA, short-throw projectors are thriving, with ultra-short-throw projectors (throw ratio less than 0.38) grabbing a growing market share. The ultra-short-throw segment doubled its share of the Mainstream projector category from Q1 2010 to Q1 2011. Also in the… View this story

It might seem like an odd comparison - amplifiers and projection screens - but they have more in common than just being components in a home theater system. Installers can build a system around these components knowing they are indifferent to technology's comings and goings. For example, an installer can spec a 9-foot wide constant-height, vertical masking, 1.3 gain screen that can be used with today's 1080p products, the emerging active-shutter 3D projector category and with future technologies like 4K video. During the time the market evolves from 1080p to… View this story

Flat-panel TVs were, for years, the be-all and end-all of consumer electronics. But that all changed as the category became commoditized with discount products and eroded margins. Today's consumers can go down to a big-box store and find a variety of name-brand and no-name brand products for a decent picture for short money. But a growing number of consumers are realizing the "big screen" isn't so big or great and are looking for something better. We've rounded up 13 projectors that offer a big-screen picture capable of displaying movies in… View this story

Based on the numbers just released by Pacific Media Associates (PMA), 3D video equipment will be more than just a fad. PMA says there will be more than 5.4 million 3D-ready projectors on the market by 2014. PMA adds that most of those 5.4 million projectors will employ Texas Instruments’ (TI) Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology because of its compatibility with the 3D video reproduction process. “PMA forecasts that the lion’s share of annual shipments will be those models incorporating TI’s DLP technology because it takes very little additional effort… View this story

Sony is planning to deliver at least one 3D projector to the home-theater market. It's really no big surprise, but we thought an update was in order since we last posted this dialog from CEPro Live! held on June 17: Will there be any projectors that are 3D? "We don't have any announcements about 3D projectors at the moment, but you can rest assured that will change shortly." Here in L.A. at a small press event, Sony demonstrated an early prototype of the projector but said little about the product.… View this story

The home theater front projector market in Q1 2010 grew sharply in both volume and value year-to-year (Y/Y), according to Quixel Research. The category increased 51 percent Y/Y in unit sales and 17 percent Y/Y in revenue, according to Quixel's "USA Home Theater and Entertainment Front Projector Market Review." Meanwhile, unit sales and volume dropped 21 percent and 25 percent, respectively, quarter-to-quarter (Q/Q). Quixel says overall value for the front projector market jumped from $62 million in Q1 2009 to $72 million in Q1 2010. However, the market was valued… View this story
