How Locking HDMI Connectors Came to Be

While numerous manufacturers have tried, only two of them have received blessings from HDMI Licensing for their HDMI locking connectors. Perfect Path from PPC is one of them. Arguably the first company to introduce locking connectors back in 2007, PPC started out with a “high-retention” product that could withstand 10 pounds of force. Early efforts from other manufacturers required external pieces, including screws and special accommodations on the components themselves. Not so with PPC cables. The first-generation product included a latch on the connector that locked into the corresponding hole…

Locking RCA Connectors Keep Cables From Slipping

We all like to talk about locking HDMI connectors, but what about those pesky RCA connections that can be just as finicky? Perfect Path (PPC) has an app for that. The company has locking connectors for both HDMI and RCA. Perfect Path marcom manager Matt Read says the locking RCA connectors were quite challenging compared to HDMI. HDMI is a standard with very strict tolerances, so you know that each port is exactly the same, he explains. With RCA, however, there is no standard and the ports vary from device…

Licensing Chief: Still No Such Thing as ‘Wireless HDMI’

Leslie Chard, former president of HDMI Licensing, told CE Pro in 2008, “There is no such thing” as “wireless HDMI.” More than two years and plenty of products later, the answer is still the same, but the messenger has changed. “HDMI is a wired play,” Chard’s successor Steve Venuti tells CE Pro. “That’s it. There is no wireless play. It [HDMI Licensing] sees wire as always delivering the highest bandwidth and the highest quality.” That’s especially true given the increasing bandwidth requirements of new technologies such as 3D, 4k x…

Who Has the Toughest HDMI Cable?
Julie Jacobson | 01/25 09:52 AM,

Let’s face it, integrators have a love-hate relationship with HDMI cables. They fall out of components. They’re terribly unforgiving if you bend them too far or damage the connector. And that’s just the beginning. For the past couple of years, cable manufacturers have implemented clever ways to overcome the inherent problems of the HDMI standard. PPC, for example, started the “locking HDMI” movement back in 2008, but other contenders have emerged since then to provide solutions for the nagging problem of HDMI cables falling out of components. Numerous other manufacturers…
