Lightning Strike Fries System, Causes $8K in Damage
Jason Knott | 12/17 09:05 AM,
5 Comments
John Hatfield, owner of Hatfield Home Theater in Tupelo, Miss., admits power protection is not a priority with his clients. Unfortunately, he recently had a chance to prove power protection's value. A installation he did at a hilltop home - with a partial copper roof - in Fulton, Miss. was struck by lightning. The system used power management from several companies. But Hatfield was stunned by the results of the strike. On one side, an entire set of equipment secured by a surge protector (an unnamed brand) was fried, resulting…

Commercial vs. Resi Back-up Power: Which is Needed More?
Jason Knott | 09/23 08:17 AM,

Many commercial buildings have back-up generators. They offer protection for outages that could compromise important data. You have to power your computers daily, run machinery, keep alarm systems activated, run cash registers, etc. But very few homes have back-up power generators. When you think about it, it’s much more important for a home to maintain power than it is for a business. Data from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) bears out that conclusion. Home Electricity In a home (see pie chart), nearly 31 percent of electrical usage goes to…

Thanks to SurgeX for providing the glossary. 1. Alternating Current (AC) - Electric current that reverses direction periodically, usually many times per second. Used for power distribution because the AC voltage can easily be changed by a transformer. 2. Ampere (Amp) - The practical meter-kilogram-second unit of electric current that is…

4 Devices You Should Never Turn Off
CE Pro Editors | 07/20 06:09 AM,
5 Comments
Even the most crammed equipment racks can be rigged to minimize energy consumption. In the case of this Rhode Island home, a Control4 automation system manages much of the power usage in this multirack setup. Most of the devices in the rack are plugged into power strips and connected to a couple of Control4 appliance modules. At night, the modules shut off the connected gear. But some devices should never be powered down. Central control system: Although thermostats, security and other subsystems can operate without the controller, you’ll want to…
