Oceanfront Home Opens Up with Motorized Shades
Lisa Montgomery | 03/08 10:05 AM,

Tucked into its natural surrounding on the ocean’s edge in Maine, this 6,500-square-foot home takes advantage of the view via huge floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. Its minimalist interior design allows the exterior to be the main eye-candy, but there are times when the owners feel more comfortable covering the glass, especially in the main space where 12-foot-tall windows make the room feel as if it’s part of the outdoors. The pros at System 7, Winchester, Mass., were able to turn this space into a private, enclosed, cozy space by installing 18…

Modern SoHo Loft Blends Design & Tech
Grant Clauser | 03/01 10:33 AM,

If some of your potential clients think electronics can clutter up a home and distract from the core aesthetics, show them this tastefully-designed loft in New York City’s fashionable SoHo district. In this modern space, Cliqk integrated a lighting, control and audio/video system that is seen and heard only when it’s needed. The owners of this loft insisted on simplicity, both in how the system operated and how it merged with the space’s design. Going for a minimalist theme, however, doesn’t mean the technology is lacking in any way. On…

CES 2013 Eureka: ‘Smart Film’ Replaces Curtains, Goes Light to Dark via Wi-Fi

Curtains are so yesterday. Opulis is introducing at CES 2013 an adhesive “smart film” that is affixed to windows, and then lightened or darkened via mobile devices. The Wi-Fi version from Sonte is on display at Eureka Park, the start-up section of CES at the Venetian. A Z-Wave version from Aeon Labs can be seen in the Z-Wave pavilion in the south hall of the LVCC. The product is user-friendly. Cut it to size, peel off the adhesive and apply. The companies aren’t saying what the film will cost, but…

CES 2013 Shocker: Lowe’s Iris Home Automation Has Legs
Julie Jacobson | 01/10 09:05 AM,

Lowe’s may well be the first retailer to succeed with home automation. That’s my verdict after visiting with the home improvement store at CES 2013 and revisiting the Iris solution that didn’t impress me a year ago. What started as a modest solution based on the AlertMe ZigBee-enabled home control system from UK is now full-fledged platform compatible with ZigBee and Z-Wave. At $9.99 per month, the system blows away what Verizon gives you for the same price. The Iris hub features ZigBee, Z-Wave and WiFi, and also boasts a…

Motorized window coverings was named one of CE Pro’s Top 5 Home Technology Opportunities for 2013, but how can integrators break into this category without lots of headaches? One way might be to use the power of a nationally recognized brand name with a built-in crew of installers to help consumers feel at ease. That’s the message from the folks at Hunter Douglas, which is targeting integrators via its Electronic Solutions Inc. (ESI) motorized shade control brand. Last fall, the company had a booth at CEDIA Expo for the first…
