The O3HD, O4HD and O6H systems, once primarily available online, can now be found at some of Best Buy’s Magnolia Audio Video and Magnolia Design locations. Over the past few years it seems that high-end dedicated music servers have lost some of their shine. This has largely been due to the ease of music streaming services, and of course the iPod family. Olive, a company that makes a handful of hard-drive based single-room music servers (the O2HD is a multiroom system, but not available from Magnolia) has been targeting the… View this story

Fusion Research recently debuted its new Genesis Movie Server with support for 3D Blu-ray content. "We've been monitoring the 3D marketplace for some time and we weren't going to push to be an 'early adopter' of the technology,” says Ingo Schmoldt, vice president of sales for Fusion. “Seeing the number of requests for 3D support from our dealers and their clients grow, we've taken the time to develop and deliver one of the best 3D experiences in the market place.” 3D-supported units will begin to be rolled out with the… View this story

A number of years ago Kaleidescape popularized the concept of a living room-based media server product when it introduced its line of media server products, which leveraged commercial IT technologies and a proprietary, easy-to-use interface. Fast forward to December 2010 and the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company is back at it again. Earlier this month the company introduced its new lower-cost Cinema One entertainment server, which will carry a MSRP of $5,000, and it's designed to provide installers with an out-of-box solution that instantly provides homeowners with a device capable of storing… View this story

If you like integrating Apple TV with home control -- as many CE Pros do -- it’s best to stick with the original model rather than “upgrade” to the new Apple TV 2. Autonomic Controls and Extra Vegetables, two of the original and most popular creators of two-way Apple TV drivers, tell CE Pro that the new Apple TV does not lend itself to integration. Follow us on Twitter! juliejacobson ce_pro“We confirmed that the new device has changed the protocol in a manner that makes it controllable only by other… View this story

AMX is the latest casualty of the DVD CCA, which recently notified the company that its MAX product line "is non-complaint with the provisions and conditions required in the current CSS License Agreement." CSS (Content Scramble System) is the encryption scheme that protects copyrighted DVDs; the DVD CCA (Copy Control Association) is the organization that licenses the technology. AMX denies the DVD CCA's claim, but rather than fight the association, AMX has elected to kill MAX. The line includes more than a dozen Linux-based servers that could rip and store… View this story

The headlines are getting old: Media Server Business Closes Doors. The latest casualty is Imerge, the UK-based manufacturer whose Xiva platform was once the darling of third-party server vendors. Imerge was one of the most established developers of music servers, particularly in Europe, offering the popular audio-only SoundServer since since the early 2000s. The company added DVD management capabilities by 2008. Imerge CEO Cameron Wade said in a letter to customers and partners, “It is with great regret that I must inform you today that, effective immediately, Imerge Ltd. is… View this story

ReQuest is making it more affordable to distribute movies, music, photos and all manner of Internet content throughout the house. The company’s new MediaPlayer client, expected to ship in June, will retail for “just” $1,195. That may seem like a lot if you’re Media Centers and cheap extenders, but the price is right for a dedicated, high-quality, whole-house media system – which ReQuest is famous for. The MediaPlayer is better than half the price of ReQuest’s other media extender, the Intelligent Media Client. The IMC has a few key features… View this story

My, my, a lot of negative comments on the “big” news that Kaleidescape is adding Blu-ray support to its movie servers … with the caveat that the disc must be in the tray in order to play it. OK, so it’s not ideal. You think Kaleidescape is happy about it? The really big news in the announcement is that Kaleidescape does in fact have a road map. What is the most worrisome thing about a Kaleidescape system? That the courts will rule its DVD servers illegal and the company will… View this story

Sunfire is the latest manufacturer to drop its media server, following Escient, Axonix (morphed to something else) and much earlier Xperinet. The company is phasing out the Theater Grand Media Server (TGM-100) introduced last year at a retal price of about $6,000. Why bother with it, really, since sister company Elan will offer a media management solution with the forthcoming G control system. Besides, the media server was a strange fit for Sunfire, whose strength is in subwoofers, speakers and related electronics. “With the release of Elan’s new G system,… View this story

VidaBox may be the first server manufacturer to take advantage of Escient’s demise, but others will surely follow. This just landed in my inbox: VidaBox Announces Discount & Trade-in Programs for Former Escient, Axonix, and Xperinet Dealers For dealers who want to trade in their existing equipment, VidaBox will be offering a $500 credit for any VS-100 or VS-200 system, or a $250 credit for any VC-1 system for up to 3 units. Alternatively, former authorized dealers of the three brands who need media servers for upcoming projects can receive… View this story
