Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, Epson and three other makers of LCDs have agreed to pay more than $553 million to settle price-fixing claims on TVs, notebook computers and monitors, according to Reuters. According to the article, the settlement (Case: TFT-LCD (Flat Panel) Antitrust Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 07-md-01827) is based upon lawsuits that claimed the manufacturers conspired to inflate prices and stifle competition between 1999 and 2006. Turnabout is fair play – and quite common – in the legal world. Indeed, Crestron is lashing back at Savant Systems, which sued the home automation giant last year for alleged antitrust violations and other illegal conduct. Crestron filed a counterclaim last week, seeking treble damages against Savant for its alleged “publicity stunt” in filing a lawsuit in the first place. CE Pro has examined the documents in this latest filing. As it noted in an earlier response to Savant, Crestron reiterates that it must not be engaged in illegal… View this story

Crestron Electronics has filed a lawsuit against Cyber Sound & Security LLC, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based integrator that used to be one of Crestron’s biggest home automation dealers. The suit was filed on June 16 in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, just as Crestron was filing a countersuit against competitor Savant Systems. The whole ordeal began when Savant sued Crestron last September for alleged antitrust and other violations. Crestron fired back last week with its own counterclaims, alleging that Savant interfered with contracts between Crestron and its business partners,… View this story

On the eve of CEDIA Expo 2010, Savant Systems LLC filed a lawsuit against Crestron, alleging antitrust violations in the home automation market – namely, that market leader Crestron engages in “a pattern of anticompetitive, unfair and deceptive practices designed to thwart competition from Savant and others on the merits, to prevent and/or disincentivize dealers from carrying Savant products, to deprive end user customers of a choice between Savant and Crestron products, and to exclude Savant from The Market.” Much has happened since Savant’s original filing on Sept. 22, 2010.… View this story

Crestron has tried twice to dismiss an antitrust claim against the company by home automation rival Savant Systems LLC. But the second call for a summary judgment was denied on May 19 by Judge Edward F. Harrington of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. [Update: Court documents indicate that Crestron's first motion to dismiss was withdrawn after Savant amended its complaint.] In his ruling, however, the judge left open the possibility that Crestron could file yet another motion for summary judgment at the close of discovery.… View this story

Savant filed a lawsuit against Crestron this week in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The filing, downloaded from Pacer.com, is excerpted below. In essence, Savant accuses Crestron of violating the Sherman act and other laws concerning anticompetitive practices. Allegedly, Crestron explicitly and implicitly keeps its dealers from carrying the competitive Savant lines, and also makes false claims about Savant, its personnel and its products. Savant is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages. Among Savant's claims and assumptions: Savant estimates that U.S. revenues for automation systems… View this story
