Where does an iPad belong? On a countertop? Coffee table? The couch? Your lap? Or should it be Velcroed to your dashboard, mounted on the wall like a monitor, moved from wall station to wall station via plastic tabs or snap-on discs, or mounted permanently behind a bezel? CE Pros are debating this very topic on dealer-oriented forums, and the opinions are mixed. In our world, the iPad is so cheap – practically free -- that you may as well buy several of them and lock them into the walls… View this story

While specialty A/V manufacturers are rushing to finish their all-too-clever iPad wall mounts, a new company is sneaking in with a solution so simple it’ll make you do that V8 head-smack thing. The new product is the PadTab, comprised of two very-flat pieces with sticky stuff on the back: Affix the PadTab piece to the back of the iPad, and the small WallTab to any flat surface such as a refrigerator, hallway or that wall opposite the toilet. Both items can be painted, so the little WallTab can practically disappear… View this story

Let the battle of the in-wall iPad docks begin. We already have iPort and Savant. Now look out for iDocx, a start-up company run by home systems integrators. At CEDIA Expo 2010, the company will debut in-wall mounting stations for the iPad, iPod and Philips Pronto 9800. “About a year ago, I started to develop docks. I noticed everything was made out of plastic and imported," says iDocx principal Nick Visser, a custom integrator for the past 10 years. "We can do this better," he adds. "We set out to… View this story

Manufacturers are rushing to get in-wall iPad docks to market, but so far we haven't seen much. We've seen tabletop docs for iPad, and we've seen in-wall stations for the iPod. We've also seen the slick iPad in-wall from Savant. Now we finally have a picture of the forthcoming CM2000 in-wall iPad dock from iPort. Keith Rose of Inspired Electronics, Palatine, Ill., posted the above photo on RemoteCentral.com. He says, "The iPad looks really cool in the wall. Very flush, paintable bezel, solid construction. They did a nice job on… View this story

iPort is now shipping its new Control Mount Series for the Apple iPod touch and iPad. Both products are targeted at the custom installation market. (Update: iPort now explains that the product will ship "later this month in limited quantities." More details in the "Comments" section below.) The iPort CM-IW100T (CM100) Control Mount encases an iPod touch in a wall-mounted chassis with a magnetically attached, rectangular fascia, as does the iPort CM-IW2000 (CM2000) for the iPad, transforming the handheld devices into in-wall touchscreens running control apps over WiFi. The CM100… View this story

Savant In-Wall iPad Dock
Jason Knott | 06/09 02:04 PM, 30 Comments
Consumers have gone gaga over the iPad. No news there. And custom integrators are salivating at the prospect of selling these highly functional, sleek touchpanels to homeowners looking for a stable wireless control interface. Totally groundbreaking. As one integrator told me: "I've sold my last dedicated wireless touchpanel." He says all his wireless touchpads will now be iPads. They are much less expensive and, he says, much more stable. Savant has followed up the hoopla with another big announcement: the first in-wall iPad dock. Savant's $500 in-wall cradle aims to… View this story

Savant In-Wall iPad Dock
Steve Crowe | 06/09 06:55 AM, 0 Comments
Lots of iPad dock/mount news early this morning. Premier Mounts introduced its VIP-100 and VIP-200 mounting frames, and Savant is adding two iPad docks - the In-Wall Dock ($350) and Desktop Dock ($500). Both docks are shipping to Savant dealers. The Desktop Dock comes with a charging cradle and power supply, while the In-Wall Dock has a docking cradle and magnetically-attached faceplate. The In-Wall Dock supports both landscape and portrait configurations and sends an alert if the iPad has been removed from the dock without authorization. Savant CEO Robert Madonna… View this story

Premier Mounts debuted its VIP-100 and VIP-200 iPad mounting frames at InfoComm in Las Vegas. The VIP-100 and VIP-200 allow the iPad to be fastened to a wall, table mount, stand or other compatible VESA 100 mounting pattern. We’re expecting it in more of an office environment, but since Premier offers plenty of residential mount solutions, we're expecting some overlap or other iPad mounts for kitchen or bedside use. There’s no word on pricing, but check Premier Mounts dealer if you or a client wants to dock an iPad for… View this story

Integrators awaiting an in-wall iPad docking station might have to keep waiting. In an exclusive interview with CE Pro, Sonance CEO Ari Supran says the company's 2009 patent for its iPort product line of in-wall iPod docking systems also covers in-wall iPad docking systems. Patent No. 7,493,142, filed on October 23, 2006 and granted on February 17, 2009 is for: “A wall mountable audio device connector dock for connecting handheld audio devices to a remote audio system, the connector dock comprising: a body portion extendable within the wall; a mounting… View this story
