CEA Audio Group Looks Beyond High-End Sources, Products

The Home Audio Division division of the Consumer Electronics Association used to be a little snooty, with most board members representing high-performance brands and catering to discriminating listeners. CEA: Cloud Will Thrive, So Will Local Storage, Services

The cloud is one of the Top 5 Technology Trends to Watch in 2012, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. No big surprise there. Even so, it was interesting to hear from CEA chief economist Shawn Dubravac and CNET senior writer Roger Cheng, who discussed the subject during this week’s CEA Industry Forum in San Diego. The Wii Effect: Are You Selling ‘Just in Case’ Products?

There’s no stopping the gaming juggernaut this holiday season. In Q4 2009, sales of video game consoles and related products rose 5.5%. This year during the same period, we should see a 14.4% rise, according to Shawn DuBravac, chief economist for the Consumer Electronics Association. Speaking at CEA’s Industry Forum in San Francisco, DuBravac referred to a “Wii effect,” in which non-gamers purchased the popular Nintendo gaming system “just in case, because you never know when you need a Wii.” God forbid, the holiday party fizzles.
