Which new technologies will change the CE pro business landscape in 2011? We’ve highlighted seven of them, and will explain what they mean for integrators during CEProLive this Thursday, Nov. 11. The day-long virtual event is free for registered pros. And the game-changers are: 1. 3D TV Stop rolling your eyes. 3D TV has only just begun, and CE pros already are complaining about it. But you complained as well during the rollout of HDTV, which was just as painful – and ultimately less exciting – than the rollout of…

How Computers Simplify Home Health Care
Lisa Montgomery | 10/05 08:03 AM,

With healthcare costs spiraling out of control, a number of forward-thinking electronics manufacturers are developing solutions that enable a person’s health and wellness to be monitored and managed electronically from the comfort of their homes. But as a few key industry experts pointed out at CEDIA Expo in Atlanta, often it’s the simple technologies, like a basic computer and Internet access, that can make the biggest impact in a aging or disabled person’s life. “You can monitor the heck out of mom and dad, but if they aren’t engaged and…

Randy Stearns Weighs in on iPad, 3D, Streaming Media

Randy Stearns, president of Engineered Environments, runs down a list of new technologies' impact on custom electronics: iPad There is no question that Stearns sees the iPad as the future interface. "The iPad will change, and in some ways the iPhone has already changed, our industry as we know it," he says bluntly. "Firstly, the iPad resets the price tolerance for a touchpanel, now firmly set at $500. No one in their right mind will spend $2,000 to $8,000 or more for a touchpanel that is bulky and overweight, does…

Sadly for patients and loved ones alike, Alzheimer's sufferers may be trapped in the now, unable to recognize family members or summon memories. But music has been known to bring Alzheimer's patients out of their reverie, reminding them of people and experiences gone by. "We believe it can help to revive memories," says Rob Garrett, principal of Cypress Springs Residence, an Alzheimer's facility in Tulsa, Okla. (A second residence is under construction in Oklahoma City.) "For some of the residents, music was a big part of their lives." Related Content…

Integrator Uses Automation to Help Autistic Son
Julie Jacobson | 08/19 08:49 AM,

Brody Buzzard is a playful 2-year-old with a mild case of autism. So it's no surprise that his father Mark, principal of Liberty Bell Alarm & Home Theater in Sacramento, Calif., has taken an interest in home health technology. As a Control4 dealer, Mark Buzzard has rigged an automation system specifically for the needs of Brody and his care takers - mom and dad. "Autistic children are very visual," says Buzzard. "Using a visual communication strategy really helps them understand what is happening next and what to expect. It relieves…

You’ve heard this before, but demand for home health technology appears poised to go mainstream. Gate’s keynote will focus on mobile technologies to improve health outcomes in the developing world. The summit is organized by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the mHealth Alliance. 6 Great Home Health Products
Julie Jacobson | 08/02 08:09 AM,

For at least three years, CE Pro has encouraged integrators to explore a promising new market for home technology: seniors and other adults who need a little help living independently. This year, we took our coverage to a new level with the industry's first Home Health Technology Pavilion at the 2010 Electronic House Expo in March. The pavilion featured six vendors who believe CE pros are well positioned to bring beneficial technologies to the elderly and disabled, as well as their caretakers. While some of the products at EHX targeted…

How to Capitalize on Home Health Tech
Julie Jacobson | 08/02 08:09 AM,

Talk to just about anybody, and they'll have a story to share about an aging loved one. Often, those stories are punctuated with feelings of worry, guilt and uncertainty over how to best care for their elderly parent or friend. Factor in the astronomical costs of long-term care, and it's easy to see why some healthcare analysts believe the digital home healthcare industry will grow from a $2 billion business today to a $20 billion industry by 2020. With little direction from insurance companies, regulators and the seniors industry in…

Breaking into Home Health Tech: How to Smart Small
Julie Jacobson | 08/02 08:06 AM,

Presto’s computer-free email system Ever since we began to cover home health technology - especially solutions aimed at seniors and their caretakers - we've been asked by integrators how they can break into this market. Normally, the discussion starts with personal emergency reporting systems (PERS) like alarm-call pendants, and then moves quickly into full-fledged home monitoring systems that help seniors live more independent lives. Which solutions are the best? What are the liabilities? Is training required? How do you customize a system? Do fall detectors really work? What is the…

iPhone Automation for the Visually Impaired
Julie Jacobson | 07/20 04:54 AM,

Touchscreen-based controllers can be challenging for the visually impaired. No hard buttons? How do they know what they’re pressing? Built into newer iPhones, the iPad and Mac OS X computers is a feature called VoiceOver, which makes it relatively easy to navigate through menus without seeing them. Apple has adjusted the touchscreen (and mouse) gestures and added voice feedback so users can simply tap the screen once to initiate reading, and tap twice – anywhere on the surface -- to activate the button just recited by the virtual help-mate. Users…
