CE Pro and Middle Atlantic Products want to show off the best racks in the fourth annual Great Looking Racks contest. We want to feature the best A/V racks you've ever built in the November issue of CE Pro. But while the back of the rack always gets the most attention for great wiring, we want to see what you've done to the front. Maybe they’re tricked out. Maybe they solve unique installation challenges. Maybe they use neon lights or feature a monitor. We want to show off your work!…

Middle Atlantic BGR equipment racks
Robert Archer | 08/11 05:25 AM,
Efficiency and versatility are more than buzzwords these days for installers, they are necessary traits that must be incorporated into today's product market. Middle Atlantic, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of racking systems and accessories has taken these ideals to heart with the introduction of its BGR Series of equipment racks. The company first introduced the line at the recently completed InfoComm commercial electronics trade show and it is now shipping the products. Middle Atlantic says the line can be used for commercial and residential electronics installations, and it says the…

Neat-O: Retrofitting ‘Horrible’ Home Theater
Arlen Schweiger | 08/04 09:09 AM,

Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Central Coast Audio Visual was originally brought into this project to replace four outdoor televisions, and its “Neat-O” work and professional work ethic led to a whole-house retrofit project. Regarding the outdoor TVs, the original integrator had installed standard TVs, and over a year’s span in the sunny Southern California climate every one of them had failed, says CCAV owner Chris Wilson. So the seed of this project was their replacement with SunBriteTV all-weather displays. “At this point we thought our project was over,” Wilson notes. But…

$1M ‘NASA Control’ Room Part of Massive Retrofit
Steven Castle | 06/09 08:28 AM,

For installer Michael Wackernah of Limitless Systems Inc. (LSI) in Huntington, N.Y., this 24,000-square-foot retrofit project was an Olympic test of endurance, attention to detail and control (both emotional and technical). “He’s the CEO of a profitable technology company, so he’s always on his game,” Wackernah says, adding the client double-checked LSI’s work, and required them to vacuum behind drilled drywall. Needless to say, this retrofit involved a lot of extreme vacuuming, because LSI retrofitted nearly everything, including a 65-inch Samsung 3D TV wired through an 8-foot-wide stone fireplace. LSI…

How A/V Switching, Automation Help Comcast Call Center
Arlen Schweiger | 03/23 08:15 AM,

Here’s a twist on the often repeated tale of the professional integrator cleaning up a project after the cable guys: the professional integrator doing a project for the cable guys. It’s a good thing for Comcast that Centennial, Colo.-based Logic Integration put in, and eventually won, the bid to outfit the provider’s Denver call/command center, too. Had the corporate cable guys stuck with their original plan, the call center workers might have quit already. According to Logic Integration CEO Shawn Hansson, Comcast was planning on purchasing four TVs from Best…

Hollywood Home Hides 103-inch Plasma in Ceiling
Steve Crowe | 10/21 06:59 AM,
6 Comments
Have a 103-inch plasma descend from the ceiling? Ben Henkel and his team at Integrated Systems (iSys) in Tarzana, Calif. didn’t know if it could been done. Panasonic’s titanic plasma had mounting holes for its own wall-mount system, but not for any commercially available motorized lift on the market. A lift would have to be completely customized. So Henkel turned to Art Walker at Activated Designs in Valencia, Calif. to make something that could carry the 485-pounder. Walker built a pretty standard but heavy-duty lift that uses a rack-and-pinion like…
