Mitsubishi's 75-inch LaserVue TV has won the Most Efficient Energy Star designation for 2012, making it one of the most energy-efficient TVs 55 inches or larger in the United States. Mitsubishi’s LaserVue L75-A94is the largest TV to be recognized in the Most Efficient EPA Energy Star rankings. The TV's laser-light source delivers cinema-like color at a fraction of the power consumption of similarly-sized TVs, Mitsubishi says. The LaserVue L75-A94 operates at less than 85 watts, below the Energy Star 5.3 requirement of 108 watts. “Meeting the Energy Star Most Efficient… View this story

Can cool looks and ease of use help us save energy in our homes? If the web buzz generated by the Nest thermostat, which isn’t even available yet, is any indication, the answer is yes. Nest has a lot going for it. First off, it’s very cool looking, with a pleasing round shape to replace those bulky thermostat boxes, an easy-to-read digital readout and even a little leaf symbol that appears when you’re being good about your energy use. But perhaps the biggest things Nest has going for it is… View this story

Telecom giant Verizon has launched its long-anticipated home connectivity and energy management solution, joining huge service providers ADT, Comcast/Xfinity, Alarm.com, Vivint and others in providing basic home control of web-based cameras, wireless thermostats, lights and appliance plug-in modules. Like the other providers, remote control via smartphones is also available. Also like the other providers, Verizon’s Home Monitoring and Control system uses Z-Wave wireless mesh technology and will enable customers to turn down air conditioning or lock doors remotely, see what’s going on at home via networked cameras, and set and… View this story

Since it was announced last year, I’ve always thought the Microsoft Hohm energy management “platform” was silly. It still is, even though there’s actually a product associated with it. In my first story about Hohm, I inferred from the press release that the service was “little more than a Web site with ideas on how to save energy.” You enter a ton of information like the square footage of your home, the types of appliances you own, and your blood type (OK, not that), and Microsoft basically tells you how… View this story

When is the best time for your clients to have full electronic control over their houses? Often it’s when they’re away. It’s easy to control a home while they’re there, but when they’re away, it’s tough to know what electronics have been left on, sucking up electricity, when they should be off. “Turning things off is the basic tenet of saving energy,” says Jay McClellan, president of HAI. A remote monitoring system lets you do just that, right from your cell phone, iPod touch or any other Internet-connected mobile device.… View this story
