Telecom giant Verizon has launched its long-anticipated home connectivity and energy management solution, joining huge service providers ADT, Comcast/Xfinity, Alarm.com, Vivint and others in providing basic home control of web-based cameras, wireless thermostats, lights and appliance plug-in modules. Like the other providers, remote control via smartphones is also available. Also like the other providers, Verizon’s Home Monitoring and Control system uses Z-Wave wireless mesh technology and will enable customers to turn down air conditioning or lock doors remotely, see what’s going on at home via networked cameras, and set and… View this story

We have chided the use of load monitoring and management in the past – people don’t care about saving a few pennies per month, and there is no joy in watching bar graphs of a family’s energy consumption. But Hurricane Irene sheds light on a compelling use for load monitoring and control: managing energy consumption during a power outage when the back-up generator can only deliver power at its rated capacity and for a finite number of kilowatt hours (kWh) before you have to re-fuel with propane or gasoline. Integrator… View this story

Virtually any existing light switch can be upgraded to a Z-Wave compatible device with a tiny adapter from Aeon Labs, a company that specializes in Z-Wave accessories. As demonstrated at CES 2011, the new Aeon Micro Smart Energy Switch resides behind a light switch in a junction box, bridging the switch and the powerline. With the device in place, any Z-Wave controller can remotely dim the light via wireless Z-Wave mesh networking technology. In addition, the Micro Smart Energy Switch tracks the energy usage of the attached device and reports… View this story

It just got a whole lot less labor-intensive and less expensive for integrators to provide in-home energy monitoring solution for their clients. A new HVAC-based system from Home Comfort Zones in Beaverton, Ore., not only functions as an energy saving smart thermostat, but by adding modules it can also monitor electrical usage. As an added bonus, unlike other offerings, it can identify individual appliances without having to go through the trouble of wiring up separate line-voltage circuits or installing countless smart-outlets. Marketed as a sub-brand called EMME (Energy Management Made… View this story
