You’ve heard this before, but demand for home health technology appears poised to go mainstream. Bill Gates has agreed to give a keynote address at the 2010 mHealth Summit on Nov. 9 in Washington, D.C. Gate’s keynote will focus on mobile technologies to improve health outcomes in the developing world. The summit is organized by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the mHealth Alliance. Meanwhile, CEA says it will launch a health and fitness Tech Zone at 2011…

Julie Jacobson | 04/08 10:30 AM,

Just Add Power developed a huge following when it introduced an HDMI-over-IP solution at CEDIA 2009. The product generated tremendous debate among CE Pros, but by and large they were thrilled with the technology. Only thing is, the form factor was all wrong. “What do I know?” says founder Ed Qualls. “I’m an IT guy.” During the Electronic House Expo (EHX) in March, Qualls pointed to the shortcomings of the original product: The power was on the opposite side of the other connections, leaving it exposed to the customer-facing side…

Amulet, which makes a voice-enabled remote control for Windows Media Center, will soon make its technology available for third-party development. “We’re coming out with an SDK [software developer’s kit] to use with automation,” says president Patrick Lawless. The SDK will be available shortly after the company’s first product, the Amulet Remote, is released this summer. Lawless demonstrated the product during the Electronic House Expo (EHX) in March. Move the remote toward your mouth and the voice recognition kicks in. You can, “Play Movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” or…

Sounding Off at EHX
Robert Archer | 03/23 04:03 AM,

One of the knocks that I hear from audiophile community about custom installation is that it does not focus enough on the audio. It’s my belief that a vast majority of the systems installed by CE pros are reflective of their clients’ desires, but that’s not to say there isn’t some validity to the audiophile genre’s claim. As a whole I also believe that installers should be offering quality audio systems, especially in today’s economy where video is marginalized to the point where it’s practically a loss leader for most…

Can you make money on an inexpensive communications tool for seniors? Peter Radsliff, a former executive at Monster Cable, integrator consultant and now CEO of Presto, thinks so. The simple unit, made especially for the elder care market, converts emails and attachments into electronic letters, and transmits them over a phone line to a loved one’s residence. Presto does the work on the back end, providing the end user with an email address; transforming emailed messages and…
