Kaleidescape, maker of one of the most expensive DVD movie servers on the planet, has lost its legal battle with the DVD CCA, licensor of the Content Scramble System (CSS) required of all (legitimate) DVD players. The Santa Clary County court found that Kaleidescape breached its CSS licensing agreement with the DVD CCA and punished the manufacturer with a severe injunction that prohibits the sale of its DVD servers, and the support of servers already in the field (although Kaleidescape CEO Michael Malcolm says the ban on tech-support is limited… View this story

Walmart Entertainment Powered by Vudu

Walmart wants to be your movie server in the cloud, the digital bin where users store all DVDs for access on all Internet-connected devices. Walmart, in conjunction with Vudu, has launched an in-store program that turns DVDs into digital cloud-stored copies which, presumably, would be accessible over tablets, smartphones, smart TVs and more. Walmart acquired Vudu in Feb. 2010. Walmart, which has support from major movie studios such as Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros., the service will launch on April 16, 2012 in 3,500 stores. The back catalogs… View this story

ReQuest is making it more affordable to distribute movies, music, photos and all manner of Internet content throughout the house. The company’s new MediaPlayer client, expected to ship in June, will retail for “just” $1,195. That may seem like a lot if you’re Media Centers and cheap extenders, but the price is right for a dedicated, high-quality, whole-house media system – which ReQuest is famous for. The MediaPlayer is better than half the price of ReQuest’s other media extender, the Intelligent Media Client. The IMC has a few key features… View this story

Add Colorado vNet to a long list of companies that has dropped its movie server, following Escient, Sunfire, Xperinet and Axonix (which morphed into Mozaex). “We know some dealers really liked the piece but we needed to step back, see what products made the most sense right now and in the next few years,” says Petro Shimonishi, the head of sales and marketing for vNet. vNet launched the Vibe Video Players (VS1 Series) in 2008. Starting at $4,000 the player was on the lower end of the price scale for… View this story

Real Networks (RNWK) caved to the studios yesterday. Instead of appealing a decision that deemed its $30 RealDVD ripping software illegal, the company is paying the studios $4.5 million as reimbursement for legal fees. Under the auspices of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the studios sued Real in September 2008, claiming violations under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The company also was sued for a breach of contract with the DVD CCA (Copy Control Association), which licenses the Content Scramble System (CSS) decryption software. An injunction was… View this story

RealNetworks cannot sell its $30 RealDVD ripping software until the legality of the software is determined by the courts. That was the ruling made by U.S. District Court Judge Marilyn Patel in August, when she upheld an earlier court's preliminary injunction against sales of RealDVD. Now Real is appealing that decision, according to CNET. Real is being sued by the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA), for breach of contract. The DVD CCA claims that it is a violation of its licensing agreement to make products that enable the copying… View this story
