Mitsubishi Electric was the last hold-out in the rear projection TV (RPTV) business, and now the company is dropping the line, CE Pro has learned. Mitsubishi Electrical Visual Solutions America, Inc. (MEVSA), the group in charge of the RPTV and other video product lines for both residential and commercial markets, has sent a letter to authorized service centers (reprinted below) indicating they are “discontinuing the manufacture of 73”, 82” and 92” DLP projection televisions.” The memo, issued by MEVSA president and CEO Junichi Nose, indicates that the move is part…

Mitsubishi Touts Big Opportunities in Rear DLPs
Julie Jacobson | 10/03 07:10 AM,

Mitsubishi is pretty much the last DLP TV maker standing after Samsung exited that business in 2009. Why is Mitsubishi clinging to a technology that many would consider outdated compared to flat screens? Answer: DLP rear projection is an amazing value and there’s still money to be made, especially if you hold a virtual monopoly on the category like Mitsubishi does. “I want to know who’s making money in flat screens,” says Frank DeMartin, VP consumer product sales at Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, the consumer and professional display division…

My Love Affair with DLP Continues
Julie Jacobson | 10/03 07:02 AM,

I went through a rough patch with my 60-inch rear DLP recently, and I thought it might be over between the two of us. The Mitsubishi set, model WD-60735, started fading about a year ago and was pretty much unwatchable in recent months. Had I been an actual consumer, I might not be willing to spend a few hundred bucks on a 2.5-year-old $1,000 screen for someone to come out and repair the thing. But I was willing to invest $100 on a new lamp to see if that was…

Out, Out Damn Lamp! The Big Bummer with DLPs
Julie Jacobson | 09/27 05:08 AM,

Ignoring the warning signs, I couldn’t resist that 60-inch Mitsubishi DLP display we bought three years ago for less than $1,000. We had plenty of space for the beast, and a console to put it on. But now the display has gone dark, after gradually fading for the past year or so. I assume it’s the lamp. After all, Mitsubishi DLP lamps are one of the three big TV fails that dealers should always be prepared for. If we got three years out of the lamp, then we’re probably lucky…

Digital Projection dVision Scope 1080p projector
Robert Archer | 08/22 05:26 AM,
A few years ago the custom electronics industry discovered the fun and impact that CinemaScope video can deliver in a home environment. Since that time however the video category's focus has gone on to other technologies such as LED light engines and 3D. CinemaScope aspect ratios are however something that custom installers can still utilize to wow their clientele. Digital Projection's (DP) new dVision Scope 1080p projector provides installers with the ability to integrate a fully compatible 2.35:1 system without having to incorporate external lenses and additional vertical-stretch processing. DP…

Runco LightStyle Series LS-HB projector
Robert Archer | 01/26 04:18 AM,
If anyone had any doubts of how the A/V market has shifted just one look at Runco's latest projection product should remove all doubts. Following the annual CES show, which took place in early January in Las Vegas, the Beaverton, Ore.-based specialty video manufacturer introduced its latest LightStyle Series projector: the LightStyle LS-HB. Runco says the release of this product provides its dealers with a high-brightness product that can be placed in a non-dedicated theater environment without sacrificing picture quality. The single-chip DLP 1080p projector incorporates the company's SuperOnyx technology,…

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America (MDEA) was best known last year for two things: Unisen LED TVs with built-in immersive sound bars and big-screen DLPs ready to project 3D onto displays up to 82 inches. Now the company is combining those concepts to deliver “3D picture and 3D sound,” says Nick Norton, senior manager brand marketing. At its press event in New York on June 23, Mitsubishi will debut the new Diamond 838 Series of 3D-ready DLP TVs integrated with the company’s 16-speaker immersive sound technology previously found only in the…

1080p LCDs Outsell Plasmas, RPTV Sales Up in October
CE Pro Editors | 12/14 09:54 AM,
1080p LCDs outsold 1080p plasmas in the 50-inch to 54-inch market by nearly three to one in October, according to new research from Pacific Media Associates. The "October Consumer 2007 Flat Panel Display Tracking Service" also found that LCDs made up 80 percent of flat panels sold (26 inches and above), with 30-inch to 34-inch flat panels becoming more popular than 40-inch to 44-inch units. "Unit sales of 1080p LCD models grew 25 percent in October, and accounted for half of the total revenues for the month," says Rosemary Abowd,…
