Consumer behavior and TV set maker strategies are resulting in widely diverging product ranges across the world. While the industry is global, regional differences are increasing. For 3D, the most enthusiastic regions are Western Europe and China, while the mix of 3D in North America actually declined in Q3’11, according to the Q4’11 NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly TV Design and Features Report. ”We were surprised to find that 3D appears to be a far more popular feature in China than North America, and the penetration rate was two times higher in…

LCD TV Manufacturers React to Slower Demand

Price increases for large-area thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD panels halted in mid-June due to an uncertain demand outlook for the third quarter of 2011, according to DisplaySearch. In its MarketWise-LCD Industry Dynamics report, DisplaySearch indicates that demand is slowing, so manufacturers are making adjustments to plant capacity to prevent drastic panel price fluctuations. Panel makers originally expected to raise capacity utilization - the ratio of actual output to total available capacity - to an average of 90 percent in Q3 2011. However, as indicated in the study, capacity utilization will…

Study: Smart TVs Account for 21% of Shipments in 2010

DisplaySearch is reporting that 21 percent of all TVs shipped globally in 2010 have Internet connectivity, but the trend could end up crippling the Internet. According to the DisplaySearch Q4’10 Quarterly TV Design and Features Report, the category is forecast to grow to over 122 million in 2014. The report suggests that international markets are fueling the growth, namely Japan, Eastern Europe and China. “The looming risk now is what happens if every connected TV gets used,” says Paul Gray, director of European TV Research. “With Netflix accounting for 20…

Report: TV Margins Lousy in 2009, Better in 2010
Julie Jacobson | 05/28 05:20 AM,

We keep talking about premium features saving the display market, bringing high prices to dealers and joy to consumers. That wasn’t the case in 2009, however. DisplaySearch reports that 2009 LCD TV average selling prices (ASP) fell twice as fast as they did in 2008 -- about 24% year-over-year. Plasma displays did not fare much better. ASP for last year fell 21%. DisplaySearch attributes the price erosion to a massive glut in Q4 ’08 and Q1 2009. Meanwhile, lower prices attracted more customers, so unit demand for flat panels in…

This seems like a no-brainer, judging by what was on display at CES 2010, but DisplaySearch issued a report saying 3D TVs and connected TVs will explode in 2010. DisplaySearch says 3D-ready TVs will grow from 200,000 units in 2009 to 1.2 million units in 2010. There will be 64 million 3D units by 2018, according to the report. "We have passed the first hurdle," says Paul Gray, DisplaySearch director of TV electronics research. "The critical Blu-ray 3D specification is written, but now comes the hard work of securing interoperability.…

The 3D display market, according to DisplaySearch, will take off in 2010. DisplaySearch is forecasting growth from 0.7 million units and $902 million in revenue in 2009 to 196 million units and $22 billion in 2018. That would mark a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38 percent for revenue and 75 percent for units. According to DisplaySearch, 3D-ready TVs will grow from 0.2 million units in 2009 to 64 million units in 2018. DisplaySearch also says "eye wear will be necessary for most 3D applications for many years to…
