The home market is starting to pick up, and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) says you can thank technology for some of that turnaround. According to results from the CEA’s 10th Annual State of the Builder Technology Market Study, home technology is strongly solidified in builders’ portfolios of services and offerings. The CEA says items like structured wiring are becoming standard, while home control and entertainment offerings are helping builders stand out in the competitive marketplace. “This year’s study confirms CEA’s long-held belief and prediction that home technology would make… View this story

Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, hasn’t exactly “endorsed” Mitt Romney for president, but he’s a gushing supporter, CNNMoney reports. It’s no surprise Shapiro, an advocate for free markets and limited government, is supporting a Republican and fiscal conservative, especially one that is remotely tolerable to social liberals. Shapiro’s book The Comeback: How Innovation Will Restore the American Dream, is critical towards modern-day Democratic-inspired policy. In 2008, Shapiro and HP chief Meg Whitman launched a campaign called Tech Executives for Romney. That's the same year Shapiro… View this story

The Consumer Electronics Association has formed a new working group called Device, Apps and Content (DAC) to unite content providers and consumer electronics (CE) device manufacturers. The group will be a collaboration among device manufacturers, content creators, aggregators and app developers to increase and enhance consumer availability of content and apps on CE devices. “Our aim is to transform content convergence so that consumers have better access to what they want directly from their electronic devices," says Jason Oxman, SVP, industry affairs for CEA. The DAC working group is chaired… View this story

Touting its new report on gender and technology, the Consumer Electronics Association proclaims, “Tip for Valentine’s Day: Women Want Electronics.” I’m skeptical. Isn’t that like the National Fishing Association declaring, “Women want lures for Valentine’s Day”? In the CEA’s new study, “Women and CE,” the organization finds eight in 10 women “expressing an interest” in CE products, with 41% of those saying they are “very interested” in CE. That’s an increase of 10 percentage points over the previous study in 2007. But does an interest in CE mean a woman… View this story

One of the industry's most likable guys, Walt Zerbe, was honored last night with the Consumer Electronics Association's 2012 TechHome Leadership. The award was bestowed by TechHome chair Ian Hendler of Leviton, in a reception at the CEProCES TechZone. Zerbe has been involved in the custom electronics and pro A/V business for 25 years -- more if you count his years of tinkering before starting a home systems integration firm. Currently, he is a product manager for multiroom A/V manufacturer Russound, where he has worked for five years following a… View this story

The Consumer Electronics Association – which typically supports lower taxes and other small-government positions – has shifted its stance on Internet sales tax. It now supports the tax. Network World reports: For years, CEA has opposed efforts in the U.S. Congress to require Internet sellers to collect sales taxes, but the group has changed its mind, Gary Shapiro, CEA's president and CEO, said Tuesday. CEA's opposition to Internet sales taxes was based on the premise that the Internet was in its infancy, but that's no longer the case, he said.… View this story

The Consumer Electronics Association is ending its one-year-old CEA Tech Enthusiast initiative. Launched in late 2010, the program was CEA’s first concerted effort to bring consumers into the trade organization. For $49, enthusiasts could enjoy a members-only forum, the opportunity to beta-test products, and special discounts from CEA members – like a free HDMI cable with any A/V receiver, currently offered by Home Theater Entertainment Solutions in East Meadow, N.Y. When TE debuted last year, CEA allowed the first 1,000 members to attend the final day of the 2011 Consumer… View this story
