HDBaseT was a little quiet this year at CES. The technology, the Alliance, and the developer Valens Semiconductor took shelter in a meeting room … hopefully meeting with major CE brands that want to implement the technology on a broad scale, which we have yet to see. No doubt HDBaseT -- which delivers audio, HD video, Ethernet data, control signals and power over a single Cat 5 cable -- is rock solid and a blessing to home systems integrators and discriminating consumers. It has been employed successfully by several respectable… View this story

Gefen is getting into the A/V control business. The famous maker of A/V switchers, extenders and adapters demonstrated for the first time its new GAVA (Gefen Audio Video Automation) system during CES 2012. The new GAVA line includes the GAVA processor and two control hubs: the Professional Automation Control System (PACS) and the Mini PACS, which differ only in their I/O feature set. Both models offer RS-232, IP and IR communications, as well as relays for triggering motorized shades or other automated devices (more details in PR and specs, next… View this story

For home automation buffs, one of the coolest products at CES 2012 is in the Z-Wave pavilion, where Fujikom is demonstrating multi-colored LED light bulbs with Z-Wave home automation technology built in – just screw them into standard light sockets, and control them with your iPad, PC or handheld remote. Called LeDenQ, the Fujikom system makes all those Z-Wave door locks, thermostats, light switches, garage door openers and sensors seem like yawners. A tiny RGB light, maybe one-inch squared and super-thin provides about 800 lumens of light, equivalent to a… View this story

By now, you probably know Tosy by the pre-show press surrounding Justin Bieber, who will appear today at the Tosy booth from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the Robotics TechZone at CES 2012 (South Hall, lower level, around 21964). But you should get to know Tosy by some of the cool robotics that the Vietnamese company makes. During CES, Tosy demonstrated the SketRobo, which reportedly can teach kids how to draw but really it’s just a cool toy. The little fella sits in a chair and draws whatever you ask.… View this story

One of the industry's most likable guys, Walt Zerbe, was honored last night with the Consumer Electronics Association's 2012 TechHome Leadership. The award was bestowed by TechHome chair Ian Hendler of Leviton, in a reception at the CEProCES TechZone. Zerbe has been involved in the custom electronics and pro A/V business for 25 years -- more if you count his years of tinkering before starting a home systems integration firm. Currently, he is a product manager for multiroom A/V manufacturer Russound, where he has worked for five years following a… View this story

Strolling through the CES 2012 show floor yesterday, we noticed that virtually every major CE brand – and lots of small ones – were touting their products as part of a smart home ecosystem. While many stopped short of integrating with lighting and other home automation devices, the product roadmaps are clear: They’re going there, starting with thermostats for most of them. CE Pro captured this practice run at the Toshiba booth (video below), where actors demonstrated the seamless transition from the smart home to the smart car. “Toshiba is… View this story

Introduced today at CES 2012, the new HC-800 from Control4 is the company’s most powerful home automation controller yet, and it’s packed with connectors that were lacking in its predecessor, the HC-1000. The 1U piece is “the most powerful processor we’ve ever delivered,” says product manager Kordon Vaughn, ticking off the list of features: on-screen Navigator (Control4 interface) and audio through HDMI, analog and digital outputs to deliver four independent audio zones, two RS-232 ports, six IR ports and more …. “eSATA on the back panel is wicked! says Joey… View this story

The International Consumer Electronics Show once was a hotbed for home automation, packed with top brands and start-ups alike. These days, though, it’s harder to find automated lights, smart thermostats, and whole-house solutions. If you’re in the market for such technologies, though, here’s where you can find them on the CES 2012 show floor and elsewhere. NextGen Home with Savant, Leviton, Kwikset (LVCC 26100) For years, the NextGen Home stood in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), promoting such automation systems as Life-Ware (where?) as well… View this story

In its “official blog,” Microsoft has announced that CES 2012 would be the last Consumer Electronics Show for the giant because “our product news milestones generally don’t align with the show’s January timing.” In the blog, Frank X. Shaw, corporate VP, corporate communications for Microsoft writes says 2012 would be the last year that Microsoft would present a keynote address and have an official booth at the show. Even so, he says, “We’ll continue to participate in CES as a great place to connect with partners and customers across the… View this story
