DTS Theater Sound Goes to 11
Arlen Schweiger | 03/08 08:16 AM,

It’s fitting that DTS authored the high-res lossless soundtrack for This Is Spinal Tap when the cult classic arrived on Blu-ray, because the audio company has cranked its latest format up to 11. There were plenty of rockin’ home theater demo at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but none quite as unique as the one in DTS’ booth. Forget 7.1- or even 9.1-channel surround sound - the DTS theater packed an 11.1-channel punch. Following in the footsteps of rival Dolby Laboratories’ ProLogic IIz technology that debuted in 2009, which…

How 4G LTE Will Change Home Control
Julie Jacobson | 01/25 12:06 PM,
6 Comments
4G LTE could be the biggest thing in home automation since the iPad, ADT and Z-Wave. The evidence was at the Verizon (VZ) Mobile booth during CES 2011. There, Verizon demonstrated how its new Home Monitoring and Control system, powered by Motorola's 4Home platform, might utilize a 4G backbone and integrate with 4G-embedded devices such as surveillance systems and home health solutions. It is that 4G integration that could give Verizon an edge in mass-market home control – a market that is increasingly crowded by the likes of ADT today…

Homeless Man Exhibits Speakers at CES
Jason Knott | 01/24 02:06 PM,
6 Comments
For many, the A/V industry is more than just an occupation. For others, it's what dreams are made of. That's the case with Kevin Nelson of Zealth Audio, who until recently was homeless on the streets of San Diego. At CES 2011, Nelson had a chance to fulfill his dreams of making world-class speakers when CEA gave him the opportunity to showcase his home-made bookshelf speakers in the high-performance audio area at the Venetian. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances brought about by his girlfriend allegedly emptying out his bank…

My Tour of High-Performance Audio at CES
Arlen Schweiger | 01/24 08:51 AM,

At the Consumer Electronics Show, the Venetian is the equivalent of audiophile nirvana. Divided into just a few floors are hundreds of rooms that contain electronics, loudspeakers and cables that are worth millions of dollars, and most of the rooms sound like a million bucks, too. Heck, some of the products in individual suites probably neared six figures on their own! I will preface this by saying I did stay away from super high-end rooms you may have read about in dedicated audio magazines, so the most expensive speakers I…

ViaPort Eliminating HDMI ‘Handshake’ Problems
Jason Knott | 01/17 12:24 PM,
13 Comments
Quietly tucked away in demo room MP 25544 in the back of the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center during CES 2011 was perhaps the biggest innovation to hit home theater in a while. Chipmaker Silicon Image showed off working prototypes of its new ViaPort Technology that solves a major HDMI problem in basic home theater design. As more consumers purchase thinner TVs, they are recognizing the internal speakers on the TV just don’t cut it, resulting in more home theaters with an A/V receiver (AVR) and external…

Blackberry Tablet OS to Challenge Android, Apple
Julie Jacobson | 01/13 12:32 PM,
8 Comments
Get ready for BlackBerry Tablet OS, the potential new Android and iPad killer from Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM). During CES 2011, RIM demonstrated its first implementation of the OS, the new 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook. But for a lack of apps -- a biggie, of course -- the PlayBook easily beats iPad and definitely gives Android-based tablets a run for the money. Speaking of money, PlayBook will retail for "less than $500". So, probably $499.99. The BlackBerry Tablet OS is powered by the lightweight, heavy-duty QNX Neutrino architecture. Acquired by…

WASP Brings Wireless Audio, Amplification to In-Wall Speakers
Julie Jacobson | 01/12 12:32 PM,
1 Comment
Last year we saw some great modules for wireless-enabling your freestanding speakers, like the Proficient AirFlex. Most of the devices comprise a wireless transmitter that plugs into a source or a surround sound processor, and an RF receiver that powers and distributes audio to a pair of speakers, most notably the rear surrounds. As handy as these RF transceivers may be, they generally ignore in-wall and on-wall speakers. Now WASP Audio Technologies has a solution for making architectural speakers wireless. The Wireless Audio Solution Products (WASP) basically feature the same…
