New England Rep Firm VAM is Resurrected
Tom LeBlanc | 02/03 11:45 AM,
2 Comments
Let's hope this becomes a trend: Companies that went out of business coming back. That’s the situation with Value Added Marketing, which suspended its operations nearly four years ago. Co-founder Chuck Schneider says he has re-launched VAM, making it “New England’s oldest new rep firm.” Schneider is partnering with Victor Moorhatch, a CE veteran with sales manager experience at Kloss Video, NAD, Atlantic Technology and WireWorld. The new incarnation of VAM, which will be located in Carver, Mass., has locked up one manufacturer, but Schneider declined to name names. “I’m…

Envive Updates TheaterStation Server, Streamer
Arlen Schweiger | 01/26 08:23 AM,

Who wouldn't want access to their entire media library — movies and music — at the press of a button? Oh, and be able to scroll through choices while looking at movie and CD artwork on the TV? And stream things, including Blu-ray, to multiple rooms in the house? OK, that screeching halt you just heard came from that last request. We know Blu-ray and media server aren't exactly peanut butter and jelly friendly right now. But Envive was presenting its take on the whole Blu-ray ripping-to-media-server dilemma during CES…

Who Has the Toughest HDMI Cable?
Julie Jacobson | 01/25 09:52 AM,
2 Comments
Let’s face it, integrators have a love-hate relationship with HDMI cables. They fall out of components. They’re terribly unforgiving if you bend them too far or damage the connector. And that’s just the beginning. For the past couple of years, cable manufacturers have implemented clever ways to overcome the inherent problems of the HDMI standard. PPC, for example, started the “locking HDMI” movement back in 2008, but other contenders have emerged since then to provide solutions for the nagging problem of HDMI cables falling out of components. Numerous other manufacturers…

HES Focuses on Content, Exclusive Lines
Tom LeBlanc | 01/22 10:20 AM,
1 Comment
Home Entertainment Source (HES), the specialty electronics leg of BrandSource and strategic partner of Progressive Retailers Organization (PRO) Group, laid out some ambitious goals during its group meeting at CES 2010. It told members that it plans to branch out or expand its offerings in several areas:GamingMobile devicesHome automationComputersEnergy managementSubscription-based contentSelf-branded or exclusive product linesWhile the first five revelations probably fall into the no-brainer category, the latter two are somewhat innovative — at least, there aren’t many established formulas for success. Content HES doesn’t have a formula for dealers making…

We've already shown you the 3D TVs, 3D Blu-ray players, and custom products, but here we round up some of the best overall products. Channel Vision Intros Mix-and-Match Wireless Audio
Julie Jacobson | 01/21 04:35 AM,
1 Comment
Whether you want wired or wireless audio, powered or passive speakers, Channel Vision has a solution for you. It starts with the company’s Hi-Fi Bookshelf Speaker, available in three sizes and “any color as long as it’s black,” says Channel Vision CEO Darrel Hauk. On their own, the speakers are passive, but they have a removable rear panel that can be replaced with one of Channel Vision’s new two-channel amps: the A0350 and the wireless WA-350 version – both rated at 50 watts per channel Or, if you’re not crazy…

Touchstone Intros Sub-$1,000 Powered TV Lift
Tom LeBlanc | 01/20 09:49 AM,
0 Comments
Touchstone Home Products has announced an automated TV lift for $999.99. Getting the new Elevate lift below $1,000 was a priority. “This is something that we worked toward for a long time," says CEO Jeff Sheahan. Meanwhile, the single actuator and lower weight increase the lift’s speed. It takes under 40 seconds to display versus 53 seconds with dual-actuator lifts, according to Sheahan. Sheahan adds that in order to get the Elevate under $1,000 and to minimize its weight (for cash and carry business), Touchstone uses a single actuator as…

Sanus Adds Floating A/V Furniture
Arlen Schweiger | 01/15 09:11 AM,
1 Comment
OK, so the headline is a little misleading ... the new Java Series JFV60 from Sanus Systems doesn't magically float. But it does look pretty cool sitting legless mounted to the wall, snug under a wall-mounted flat-panel TV as the company showed at CES 2010. The unit of course can be kept on a client's floor if you choose, where it would support up to 350 pounds of A/V gear. But with three wall studs required it still can carry 200 pounds of electronics heft to it when it's mounted…

3D Effect: Is Anyone Talking about Video Quality Anymore?
Julie Jacobson | 01/15 06:33 AM,
16 Comments
CES 2010 was a little sad in the display category. There was so much talk about 3D and Widgets that the message of video quality was lost. Beautiful LED displays got some good press, as did some of the 4K2K sets from the likes of Panasonic, Toshiba and JVC. Even so, the press (including us) was so gaga over 3D that they hardly seemed to notice the tremendous strides in “regular” TV – you know, the kind that will be watched 95% of the time. “Some people are sacrificing picture…

3D TV Roundup from CES 2010
Steve Crowe | 01/14 02:31 PM,
1 Comment
CES 2010 in Las Vegas was all about 3D. There were 3D Blu-ray players, 3D network announcements from ESPN, Discovery Channel, and DirecTV. And we had a slew of new 3D TVs from Vizio, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, and LG Electronics. Tack on James Cameron's "Avatar" exploding at the box office and signs point to 2010 being the year 3D home theater arrives. The TV manufacturers haven't released many details about pricing and availability, but they are promising to deliver 3D TVs at some point in 2010. The news and…
