The installation world is facing something of a paradigm shift with the upcoming “Analog Sunset,” referring to the phasing out of analog ports on Blu-ray players. After December 31, 2010, manufacturers will not introduce new hardware with component video outputs supplying more than an SD resolution (480 or 576i). If the manufacturer has existing models in its line-up, it will be able to continue selling that model until the end of 2013. The idea is that all high-definition video will be supplied through the HDMI connection. But that's not the… View this story

A source from the Blu-ray Disc Association told CE Pro at CES 2010 that a possible speed bump in the road to greater adoption of 3D Blu-ray may not come from the TVs, players or content providers; it may come from A/V receivers and HDMI switching devices. While HDMI 1.4 is in the specification for 3D Blu-ray, it’s not a requirement for sending a 3D Blu-ray signal from a player to a television. That’s why Sony’s Playstation 3 can be firmware upgraded to be 3D Blu-ray compatible while only having… View this story

Denon's S-5BD BD/Receiver, announced at CES 2010, is a single component that bundles a 5.1 receiver with a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player and an MSRP of $1,799. The unit's receiver section incorporates two-source/two-zone capabilities, and Denon says it supports the HDMI 1.4 spec, including its Audio Return Channel. Phil Cohn, vice president, sales and marketing, Denon Electronics, adds that the S-5BD features "breakthrough network interconnectivity" and has a lot of the same features as the Model DVD-A1UDCI Blu-ray player "at a significantly more affordable price.” Some of those features include:HDMI… View this story

Good news, fish fans. BluScenes has released three Blu-ray discs with managed copy, so you can play Coral Reef Aquarium directly from a hard drive. Now, if only there were Blu-ray players to support the new format. Earlier this year, the Advanced Access Content System License Authority (AACS-LA) published the long-awaited specification for limited managed copies. Studios will be required to offer the feature, but they can charge for the privilege. BluScenes from Scenic Labs, LLC, claims to be the first label to ship Blu-ray discs with managed copy for… View this story

Remakes of original classics can be very hit or miss, even with top directors on board (I'm looking at you, Gus Van Sant and Psycho). There have been so many versions of Star Trek to come and go, it seemed like we really didn't need another one. Turns out, maybe we did. This summer's version of Star Trek arrives on Blu-ray today, and it's been very well-received, with the distinct possibility that it'll be all over the demo scene at tradeshows like CES and CEDIA. Perhaps the infusion of young… View this story

Automating components and commands is one of the fun things we do in this business. I'm referring to a situation where you turn on device A, and other things happen without any additional actions required by the user. One automation scenario that many are familiar with involves HDMI. One of the characteristics of this interconnect is a communications protocol that switches a display on and selects an input based on powering up a source such as a Blu-ray player. Customers who have a very simple system may enjoy this feature,… View this story

The world lives, eats and breathes for new technology. It’s what CE pros do every day. The pursuit of technology is relentless. Everyone wants the latest in electronics, from flat panels to iPhones. It's great news for integrators because it means upgrades, upgrades, upgrades. But are some of those upgrades even worse than the previous technology? A recent study revealed that in an effort to save fuel, trans-Atlantic freighters have cut their average speed to 10 knots. But cargo sailing ships from 100 years ago averaged 13 knots. A single… View this story

OK, now this is what we'd call a banner week for Blu-ray. We've got special anniversary releases of some great films, all-encompassing collector packs, Oscar winners, holiday movies, action blockbusters and more. Let's start with the two anniversary edition standouts — Say Anything (20 years old now and still keeping us young) and North by Northwest (50 years since Alfred Hitchcock gave us this masterpiece). Will you be blown away by the audio? Probably not. Awed by the video? Perhaps not, though it will be interesting to see the 50-year… View this story
