Samsung Combines Blu-ray 3D Player and A/V Receiver

Samsung made a slew of new 3D announcements last week. However, one of the most interesting was a release date and pricing for the HW-D7000. First announced at January's Consumer Electronics Show, this is the first component to combine a receiver and a Blu-ray 3D player under one chassis. Talk about multitasking! The 7.1-channel receiver boasts 120 watts per channel, four HDMI inputs, Audio Channel Return, and support for Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Of course, the fun part is the Blu-ray 3D player,…

Robert Archer | 10/27 10:24 AM,
1 Comment
Many enthusiasts and electronics professionals consider Disney the benchmark of quality for home video products. Now the media conglomerate is looking to ensure consumers get the optimal home video experience. At CEDIA Expo 2010, Disney debuted its World of Wonder (WOW) Calibration Disc, a step-by-step visual guide (pdf) to calibrating and optimizing an entertainment system. The WOW disc will be released Nov. 2 on Blu-ray ($34) and DVD ($24). Disney says it's getting involved in the home theater market because a poorly set up home entertainment system can offset the…

Sony Stresses 3D, Connectivity, Pro Install with New ES Receivers
Julie Jacobson | 07/06 05:01 AM,

Sony is rolling out four new 3D products that are so good … only an A/V specialist can sell them. The new products – three 7.1 A/V receivers and a Blu-ray player -- are part of Sony’s Elevated Standard (ES) line, which is “only available to A/V specialty and installation dealers,” says Brian Siegel, vice president of Sony’s home audio and video business. Siegel and his colleagues introduced the new products to a small group of reporters last week in Los Angeles. The new 3D-capable devices are the STR-DA5600ES, STR-DA4600ES…

S1Digital P250 thin client Media Center Good news, S1Digital owners. Your ProLine Series Media Centers will be able to play 3D Blu-ray movies via an update in July. All products in the line (S800, P600 and P500) will support the format so users can enjoy an extra dimension on any 3D-enabled TV with active shutter glasses, according to the company. The entire ProLine has been “refreshed” with more internal storage, and the P600 and P500 have been upgraded to support lossless audio bitstreaming of DTS Master Audio and Dolby True…

Musings on Kaleidescape, CEA, Media Servers
Julie Jacobson | 05/12 07:58 AM,
32 Comments
My, my, a lot of negative comments on the “big” news that Kaleidescape is adding Blu-ray support to its movie servers … with the caveat that the disc must be in the tray in order to play it. OK, so it’s not ideal. You think Kaleidescape is happy about it? The really big news in the announcement is that Kaleidescape does in fact have a road map. What is the most worrisome thing about a Kaleidescape system? That the courts will rule its DVD servers illegal and the company will…

Kaleidescape Brings DRM to Blu-ray Copying
Julie Jacobson | 05/11 05:37 AM,

For seven years, dealers have recognized Kaleidescape as having the most reliable multiroom movie server in the business. But they’ve been twiddling their thumbs while the manufacturer developed a solution for Blu-ray storage. Integrators and their wealthy clients will finally get what they wished for … sort of. Two new M-Class players (M500, M300), which will ship May 18, will let users add Blu-ray discs to a Kaleidescape movie library and play them throughout the house – with one major caveat: The physical disc must be in the DVD tray.…

Avatar Blu-ray Snafu Opens Doors to Service Plans
Julie Jacobson | 05/03 04:47 AM,

You probably have heard about the problems with the new Avatar Blu-ray, which has been gumming up playback, thanks to new DRM features implemented by Fox. The problem can be solved with firmware updates, but most consumers who were psyched to play their shiny new disk wouldn’t know that. Steven Cheung of Vidabox, which makes media servers, reminds us that this experience provides a perfect opportunity to sell service plans. For its part, Vidabox offers and optional “Proactive” service plan, according to Cheung: Any Blu-ray updates are automatically pushed out,…

Find 3D Video Clips Online
Tom LeBlanc | 04/16 09:11 AM,

While 3D TVs and Blu-ray players are trickling onto the market, 3D content is lagging behind. This presents problems for CE pros looking to demonstrate 3D. The only 3D Blu-ray title currently available is Dreamworks’ “Monsters vs. Aliens.” As the 3D community waits for DirecTV and Verizon Fios to join Comcast in carrying 3D channels, there are some other 3D options, said Mark Spector, AVAD Region East 2 (Woburn, Mass.) branch manager, during a two-day 3D event hosted by the distributor at its 26 U.S. and two Canadian branches April…

Say Goodbye to Analog Ports on Blu-ray Players
Fred Harding | 02/16 08:12 AM,
28 Comments
The installation world is facing something of a paradigm shift with the upcoming “Analog Sunset,” referring to the phasing out of analog ports on Blu-ray players. After December 31, 2010, manufacturers will not introduce new hardware with component video outputs supplying more than an SD resolution (480 or 576i). If the manufacturer has existing models in its line-up, it will be able to continue selling that model until the end of 2013. The idea is that all high-definition video will be supplied through the HDMI connection. But that's not the…
